* Pig price in the North:

The Northern market unexpectedly turned down by 1,000 - 2,000 VND/kg in some provinces this morning. Currently, Northern traders are purchasing at around 68,000 - 70,000 VND/kg.

Specifically, after a decrease of VND2,000/kg, live pigs in Tuyen Quang, Vinh Phuc and Phu Tho returned to VND68,000/kg; Bac Giang and Thai Binh were both traded at VND69,000/kg after a decrease of VND1,000/kg.

* Pig price in the Central Highlands region:

The Central Highlands region continued to increase slightly, in Khanh Hoa reaching 65,000 VND/kg, the same price as in Quang Tri, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan provinces.

The remaining localities in the region are buying and selling at around 64,000 - 68,000 VND/kg.

* Pig price according to survey in Southern provinces:

In the Southern region, prices increased by 1 in Long An and Binh Phuoc , reaching 65,000 VND/kg and 66,000 VND/kg, respectively.

The highest price in the region is 67,000 VND/kg, currently recorded in Dong Nai, Binh Duong and Dong Thap provinces. The remaining provinces and cities remain stable at around 64,000 - 66,000 VND/kg.

* Supply has decreased due to Typhoon Yagi and will continue to be depleted due to the epidemic, so the herd restoration to serve the 2025 Lunar New Year is currently a challenge, pushing up the price of live pigs.

In September, the price of live pigs was 12% higher than the same period last year.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, storm No. 3 caused huge damage, killing more than 21,000 livestock and 2.6 million poultry. These are initial statistics on quantity, but the value of the damage cannot be fully calculated. Notably, some farms were flooded, killing thousands of pigs; others had to "sell out" due to damaged barns.

Mr. Nguyen Van Trong - former Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) is concerned that the actual number of damaged pigs is many times higher than the statistics. Not only that, if an epidemic occurs in the near future, the pig herd will continue to decline. Supply is forecast to continue to decrease, which will push up the price of live pigs.

Commenting on the price of live pigs for the upcoming Lunar New Year, Mr. Nguyen Van Trong said that during the recent floods, many households were raising pigs to prepare for Tet, but most of them suffered losses. It takes at least 5 months to raise commercial pigs, but now it is September (Lunar calendar), so restocking the herd to serve Tet is a big challenge. Meanwhile, restocking also requires rebuilding barns, ensuring hygiene, preparing breeding pigs, and more importantly, capital.

Faced with concerns about year-end food supply, especially pork, Mr. Phung Duc Tien, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that the above losses will significantly affect the growth rate of the livestock industry.

To solve the food supply from now until the end of the year, especially before, during and after Tet, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will direct businesses and industry associations to join in supporting people with seeds, food, materials, etc. to quickly restore production and meet maximum food demand. This is also to minimize the impact on CPI, exports and growth of the agricultural sector.

“The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development believes that production will soon recover, especially in the fields of livestock and aquaculture to ensure domestic supply and export,” Mr. Phung Duc Tien emphasized.
