Speeding up construction of La Son - Hoa Lien expressway before storm season

The project to expand the La Son (Hue City) - Hoa Lien (Da Nang City) expressway, part of the North - South expressway in the East, is being accelerated to complete the project within 240 days as planned, especially before the complicated storm season. This is a vital traffic route that plays an important role in connecting the two cities of Hue and Da Nang, contributing to completing the traffic infrastructure of the key region of the Central region.

Urgent construction before the rainy season

In April 2022, the North-South Expressway Project, East section La Son (Hue City) - Hoa Lien ( Da Nang City) with a length of 65km and a scale of 2 lanes, was put into operation, contributing to reducing the load on National Highway 1A, increasing connectivity between Hue and Da Nang, the Central region. However, having only 2 lanes has caused the Project to reveal many limitations in recent times, most notably the continuous occurrence of traffic accidents.

Faced with this worrying limitation, at the end of May 2025, the La Son - Hoa Lien section expansion project officially started construction with a total route length of 66km and an investment of more than 3,000 billion VND.

In mid-August 2025, responding to the launch of the Ministry of Construction , contractors at the construction site to expand the La Son - Hoa Lien expressway are entering the peak period of continuous construction.

The representative of the Ho Chi Minh Road Project Management Board - the project investor, said that the project not only expanded the roadbed from 2 lanes to 4 lanes but also constructed and expanded dozens of bridges, renewed the crushed stone foundation and asphalt concrete road surface, ensuring the design speed standard of 60-80 km/h. Currently, the construction site maintains 48 construction teams with more than 600 engineers, workers and more than 200 modern machines and equipment. In addition, 6 field testing stations and 2 joint testing stations are arranged to control the construction quality.

A representative of the bridge supervision consultant on the route said that the biggest challenge at present is the construction of bridge items, especially in the Bach Ma Pass area, where the terrain is complex and flash floods are likely to occur during the rainy season. The entire route has up to 50 large and small bridges, including bridges longer than 500m with piers over 40m high. Therefore, contractors must race against time, working day and night to complete the bridge piers before heavy rains come.

During the construction process, the investor will coordinate with local authorities and the police force of the commune where the project passes through to implement temporary traffic safety measures, minimize dust and noise, manage construction waste... to minimize the impact on the environment and the lives of people living along both sides of the route.

With the large scale of expansion and the volume of roadbed and bridge construction, the demand for filling materials is an urgent issue that investors and localities with roads passing through are concerned about. For the La Son - Hoa Lien Expressway expansion project, the biggest difficulty at present is the supply of stone materials. The total demand is about 385,464m³, while only about 130,000m³ have been gathered, still lacking more than 250,000m³. The investor has asked contractors to find alternative sources and recommended that localities increase the capacity of stone quarries...

Regarding the above issue, Mr. Phan Quy Phuong, Vice Chairman of Hue City People's Committee, recently requested the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Hue City to preside over reviewing and adding areas with potential for landfill materials in Phong Dien town (old) and Phu Loc district (old) to the mineral exploitation rights auction plan. The goal is to proactively exploit and effectively manage landfill resources to serve key projects, contributing to maintaining progress and saving costs for contractors. This is also the foundation for the sustainable infrastructure development orientation of Hue City in the coming time. The areas proposed to be included in the planning are conveniently located, near main traffic routes, do not negatively affect the environment and reduce transportation costs.

Towards line synchronization

In parallel with the expansion of the La Son - Hoa Lien expressway, the Ministry of Construction has recently approved the investment policy for the project to expand the Cam Lo - La Son expressway, the section connecting Quang Tri and Hue City, from 2 lanes to 4 lanes. The project has a total investment of more than 6,400 billion VND, with a total length of nearly 99km, of which about 36km passes through Quang Tri and nearly 63km passes through Hue City.

The Cam Lo - La Son expressway has been synchronously expanded to 4 lanes to meet the current high traffic volume. The starting point of the route is at Km 0+00 intersecting with National Highway 9 (in Hieu Giang commune, Quang Tri) and the end point is at Km 102+200, connecting to the La Son expressway (Hung Loc commune, Hue city) - Hoa Lien (Da Nang city). Previously, in October 2024, the Government approved the investment policy for the project to expand the North - South expressway in the East, Cam Lo - La Son section, increasing the scale from 2 lanes to 4 lanes.

Remember, in 2024, many people could not help but "shudder" when witnessing the tragic traffic accidents that occurred on the Cam Lo - La Son highway. In addition to some of the main causes of accidents due to reckless driving, not controlling speed..., there was also a part of the reason that this highway was not synchronized, only had 2 lanes...

According to the local authorities where the project passes, the investment in expanding the La Son - Hoa Lien and Cam Lo - La Son expressways is of great significance in completing the North - South traffic axis in the East; gradually realizing the national expressway network planning. When put into operation, this interconnected expressway will not only shorten travel time between localities in the Central region, but also reduce pressure on National Highway 1A, contributing to limiting traffic accidents, promoting socio-economic development and ensuring national defense and security in the region.
