These days, Nghia Lo commune is filled with the color and scent of longan flowers. The gardens stretch out, the flowers are heavy on the branches, the sweet fragrance spreads, and swarms of bees come to collect nectar. Nghia Lo commune has a total of 68.5 hectares of longan, of which 63.5 hectares are ripe for harvest. Currently, longan is in the flowering and fruiting stage.
Comrade Hoang Trung Dung - Vice Chairman of Nghia Lo Commune People's Committee, said: "Longan is one of the fruit trees that are specialized in concentrated cultivation, and is also a fruit tree for the key economic development of Nghia Lo commune. For many years, under the attention of the province and the town, Nghia Lo commune has converted old, ineffective longan varieties to new varieties such as late-ripening longan, early-ripening longan, sweet longan for high yield and quality. Along with that is technical support from specialized agencies and closely following the growth and development situation to take care of longan. At this time, when the trees begin to bloom and bear fruit, we regularly propagate to the people technical measures to take care of longan such as: limiting soil moisture, spraying biological pesticides in the permitted list to prevent and control pests and diseases, and increase the fruit set rate".
In addition, the commune government has also guided households on the process of caring for longan from flowering to harvesting and preservation; advised people to proactively grasp weather developments to take timely measures to treat pests and diseases, avoiding affecting the yield and quality of the fruit. The commune also regularly propagates to growers to raise awareness and responsibility in ensuring environmental hygiene, strictly prohibiting the use of stimulants and banned substances during the care process.
In particular, Nghia Lo town also promotes trade, calls on businesses and cooperatives to sign contracts to consume longan, helping people feel secure in production. Thanks to that, longan in Nghia Lo commune has affirmed its brand in the market, bringing a stable source of income to the people. As one of the first households growing longan in Nghia Lo commune, Mr. Vu Xuan Doan's family in village 3 owns 1,000 longan trees, harvesting 50 - 60 tons of fruit annually.
Mr. Doan shared: "To achieve high yield, longan trees must be fertilized and sprayed with biological pesticides before flowering. During the flowering and fruit-setting stages, continue to closely monitor and spray biological pesticides to increase the fruit-setting rate."
Also one of the households with experience and good economic development from growing longan, Mr. Pham Van Minh, in village 9, said: "At the stage when the longan bears young fruit, depending on the growth and development ability of the tree, the amount of fruit to leave behind is determined appropriately, so the pruning stage is very important. Accordingly, the first pruning is carried out when the fruit is young and the second stage when the longan fruit is as big as a chopstick. Only then can the tree concentrate nutrients to nourish the fruit, giving large, even fruit, beautiful appearance, thick flesh and sweet, clear juice."
Along with pest control and pruning, according to long-time longan growers in Nghia Lo commune, during the flowering and fruiting stages, it is necessary to visit the garden regularly, monitor the moisture supply, start watering continuously for 3-5 days, watering little on the first day and gradually increasing, avoiding the situation of the tree being shocked by water after a long period of water shortage, fertilizing the tree with fertilizers containing full nutrients to help the tree stay healthy, restore the root system...
With the active support of local authorities in providing technical support, guidance on proper care and connecting product outputs, along with extensive experience and favorable care conditions, this year's longan crop is expected to continue to yield outstanding productivity and quality, creating a stable source of income for people and contributing positively to the sustainable agricultural development of Nghia Lo commune.
