Many products are discounted and promotions are increased.

The Tet goods market has officially entered a fierce "race". Surveys show that the prices of special items for Tet have not fluctuated much, even some items of cakes, jams, and pork are lower than the same time last year. Ms. Dao Le, owner of an agency specializing in selling cakes, jams, and nuts of all kinds on An Duong Vuong Street (District 5, Ho Chi Minh City), said that customers buying retail via Zalo and having their goods delivered to their homes have increased since last week. On weekends, customers coming to buy goods have increased sharply. Most of the wholesale prices of dried goods have not increased this year, so the retail prices have not changed. Notably, some items have decreased by 5,000 - 10,000 VND/kg such as Phong Ky melon seeds type 1 retail price of 180,000 VND/kg, Phong Ky sunflower seeds type 1 price of 125,000 VND/kg, and boxes of whole dates with branches of 220,000 VND/kg. In addition, dried products such as dried yellowstripe scad cost 210,000 VND/kg, dried anchovies 250,000 VND/kg, seasoned squid 350,000 VND/kg, Cai Lay sausage 180,000 VND/kg.

Shelves are full of goods, prices are stable, purchasing power at supermarkets has begun to increase

"This year's dried products are delicious and the selling price is 5,000 - 10,000 VND/kg cheaper than last year because the production facilities have reduced the selling price. Therefore, this year's regular customers' orders for dried products have also increased by 10 - 20% compared to last year," Ms. Dao Le shared.

Ms. Phuoc Ha, a trader of dried goods at Binh Tay Market (District 6, Ho Chi Minh City), confirmed that the prices of dried goods such as mushrooms, vermicelli, glass noodles, and bamboo shoots have not increased compared to last year's Tet holiday. Sugar alone increased by VND2,000/kg, plus the prices of some ingredients for making jam increased slightly, causing the prices of some traditional jams to increase slightly compared to last year. For example, ginger jam increased by VND10,000 to VND140,000 - 150,000/kg, young coconut jam VND110,000/kg, and custard apple jam VND160,000/kg. However, banana jam and tamarind jam are the same price as last year, or even decreased slightly by VND5,000/kg.

In particular, the price of pork on the market has not changed, many types have even decreased by 15,000 - 20,000 VND/kg. Specifically, the price of popular pork such as pork belly is at 105,000 VND/kg, baby back ribs from 150,000 VND/kg, boneless pork belly 163,000 VND/kg, lower than before Lunar New Year 2023 from 5,000 - 10,000 VND/kg.

In addition, supermarkets and stores are also constantly launching many promotional and discount programs to attract consumers. For example, the Saigon Co.op supermarket chain has launched more than 2,000 Tet products with heavy promotions from now until February 9 (the 30th day of the Lunar New Year). Not only are there discounts on popular products for cleaning the house and clothes, but the supermarket also offers a 10-20% discount on fresh foods including pork, beef, fish, shrimp, squid, vegetables, etc.

Or some manufacturing enterprises such as Saigon Livestock and Food Processing Company (Sagrifood) have just reduced prices by 10 - 30% on herbal pork products. Vietnam Livestock Corporation (Vissan) is reducing prices by 10 - 20% on some pork products, lasting until January 31. In addition, when customers buy fresh food from Vissan, with each bill worth 250,000 VND, they will receive a free 820 ml bone broth product. In order to stimulate shopping after Tet, Vissan will continue to implement promotions of 10 - 20% discounts at supermarket systems and points of sale of the company's products. This is the first year Vissan has run a strong promotion lasting more than 1 month before Tet and is unprecedented...

Abundant goods, ensuring people celebrate Tet

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade's forecast, purchasing power during the 2024 Lunar New Year may increase by over 10% over the same period last year. The supply of essential goods has also been proactively prepared by companies very early with the amount of reserves increasing by 10-25% over the same period. To ensure the supply of goods from now until Tet, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will continue to coordinate with local departments of industry and trade, associations, and industries to strictly implement solutions to ensure supply and demand of goods and stabilize the market.

Enterprises have also prepared in advance for production and sales activities during the peak season of Lunar New Year as usual. Mr. Bui Thanh Tung, General Director of Tuong An Vegetable Oil Joint Stock Company, one of the largest cooking oil suppliers in Vietnam, said that there are only 2 weeks left until the biggest festival of Vietnamese people, so enterprises, including Tuong An, have been continuously checking shelves at points of sale, supermarket systems, convenience stores, etc. to fill the shelves, proactively source goods, and serve the year-end shopping trend. "The company always strives to reduce operating costs and control input materials to bring consumers quality products at the best prices. Hopefully, Tuong An's efforts will help consumers feel secure when purchasing products at reasonable prices," Mr. Tung emphasized.

Goods for the Lunar New Year 2024 are abundant, prices are stable, purchasing power begins to increase

Data from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade shows that 45 units have participated in supplying and distributing essential food and foodstuffs for the Lunar New Year with a value of more than VND 22,000 billion, of which more than VND 8,500 billion is prepared for market stabilization goods such as rice, poultry eggs, sugar, cooking oil, livestock meat, poultry, seafood, etc. At the same time, units are ready with plans to increase production in necessary situations, organize mobile sales to handle unusual fluctuations, local shortages, etc.; resolutely not to let scarcity, shortage of goods, imbalance of supply and demand occur in any situation.

Mr. Nguyen Nguyen Phuong, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade, informed that the department has just reported on goods for the Giap Thin Tet holiday. Specifically, the source of goods with stable prices, not increasing at any time from now until Tet and after Tet, accounts for 25 - 43%. The commitment of enterprises to not let the situation of scarcity, shortage of goods, imbalance of supply - demand in any situation is a given, but not allowing prices to fluctuate is important. The Department of Industry and Trade also assessed that the rice market in the area from now until Tet will remain stable, ensuring balance of supply - demand. Particularly, fresh goods in the days before Tet will increase about 80% compared to normal days, fluctuating from 13,000 - 15,000 tons/day.

"From now until Tet, the Department will coordinate with wholesale markets, supermarkets... to continue monitoring and evaluating the supply and demand of goods. Especially for rice, livestock meat, poultry eggs, vegetables and fruits... Normally, these items have a sudden increase in demand during Tet. However, the general plan is to be proactive in all situations. The situation of storage and preparation of goods by production and distribution enterprises shows that there is unlikely to be a shortage of goods or disruption of supply," Mr. Nguyen Nguyen Phuong affirmed.

Purchasing power increased, commodity prices stabilized

Surveys in Ho Chi Minh City in recent days have shown that purchasing power has begun to increase. In particular, supermarkets and shopping malls all said that the prices of goods this Tet are stable, with no signs of price increases. Particularly, businesses participating in the Market Stabilization Program are committed to keeping prices stable, not adjusting prices up in the month before Tet and the month after Tet. At the same time, implementing deep discounts in the 2 days before Tet Giap Thin for essential goods such as pork, chicken, poultry eggs, etc.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thang, Director of Operations of the Co.opmart supermarket chain, said that purchasing power has gradually increased over the past week compared to normal days by more than 10%. This system alone recorded a 50% increase in online orders and they were processed and delivered on the same day. Mr. Thang affirmed that the prices of goods in supermarkets under Saigon Co.op from 2023 to now have been stable, including rice, thanks to partners' commitment to prioritize supply and reasonable prices. "Saigon Co.op has proactively prepared goods in advance, proactively participated in the city's Market Stabilization Program and also worked with many partners, even some items, supermarkets cut all profits to reduce prices for consumers. The supermarket ensures to provide adequate goods at stable prices until Tet and even during Tet. People can be completely assured, not worried about shortage of goods. In the last 2 weeks before people celebrate Tet Giap Thin 2024, purchasing power will continue to increase. We expect purchasing power during Tet 2024 to also increase by about 15 - 20% like Tet 2023", Mr. Thang shared.

Similarly, the director of the dry food industry of the Lotte Mart system said that he had worked with suppliers and manufacturers very early, so the prices of many dry goods were stable. Even with items whose market prices increased by 20% such as shrimp rice and ST25 rice, the retail prices in the supermarket were still proactive in sourcing goods, competing well, with the increase only being around 10%. Especially during this time, the supermarket promoted Tet items and essential goods with a discount of 35-40%, so the number of customers increased sharply, especially over the past weekend.

Meanwhile, Mr. Tran Van Truong, Director of the Hoang Gia seafood chain, said that seafood is a fresh product, so we can only hope for increased purchasing power near Tet. Many types of seafood during the holidays are usually priced higher than usual due to higher demand than supply, so prices are expected to increase by about 20% compared to normal days, and this is a normal increase. This year, due to economic difficulties, consumers have also reduced spending on high-end goods. Therefore, Hoang Gia has also reduced imports of seafood such as Canadian lobster, Canadian crab, Alaskan lobster, etc.; instead, it mainly sells domestic seafood.

Supermarkets extend operating hours to serve people shopping for Tet

To serve people shopping during the traditional Tet holiday, many supermarkets in Ho Chi Minh City have announced to increase their operating hours. For example, supermarkets belonging to Saigon Co.op will open earlier from 6am on February 2 (the 23rd day of the Lunar New Year) and close at 10pm (ie, increase their operating hours by 4 hours compared to normal days). At the same time, supermarkets will only be closed on the first day of the Lunar New Year, and will reopen on the morning of the second day of the Lunar New Year (February 11); until the sixth day of the Lunar New Year (February 15), the entire system will operate normally. Big C (Tops Market, Go!) will also only be closed on the first day of the Lunar New Year; from the second day of the Lunar New Year, supermarkets will open normally from 8am to 10pm. Lotte Mart supermarket system will also be open until 2pm on the 30th day of the Lunar New Year, while Lotte Mart (District 7) will be open until 6pm. After that, Lotte Mart supermarkets will be closed on the first day of Tet only and open normally from the second day of Tet.

There is no price increase in goods.

Chairman of the Vietnam Retailers Association Nguyen Anh Duc commented that purchasing power in the market is still not very high compared to the same period last year, while Tet goods are abundant because distribution systems have proactively increased reserves early. On the occasion of Tet Giap Thin 2024, social security goods, volunteer organizations, and support for Tet care for disadvantaged families will be deployed more. Abundant supply while purchasing power is difficult to increase sharply is the main reason for stable prices of goods this year. There will be no situation of raising prices high in the days before Tet, especially in large distribution systems.
