The series "The Brothers Sun" - starring Michelle Yeoh - had its sequel production plans canceled, despite being highly appreciated by experts.
Deadline reported on March 1 that Netflix will not be filming a second season of The Brothers Sun. The news comes nearly two months after the first season premiered on January 4.
Variety said the cancellation was a sign that streaming platforms, studios and distribution networks are closely monitoring production costs, especially in times of inflation.
According to Collider, the project received positive reviews, but struggled to find a large audience. After its release, the show remained in Netflix's Top 10 English-language series for five consecutive weeks. However, the series' weekly viewership was below seven million, and fell to just under two million in its final two weeks on the chart.
The first part received much praise from experts. Collider wrote: "The Brothers Sun combines many genres. Thriller and psychological elements are hidden inside layers of comedy". Observer commented: "The work is full of energy, inviting viewers to experience an interesting journey".
Empire magazine commented that many of the film's funniest moments came from Michelle Yeoh's (as Eileen) scenes. The artist improvised well in many scenes that required depth, balancing the character's seriousness and humor.
The film, created by Bryon Wu and Brad Falchuk, revolves around the family of Boss Sun (played by Johnny Kou) - the head of the Triad. When Boss Sun is assassinated by a mysterious organization, his eldest son Charles Sun (Justin Chien) decides to leave Taipei for Los Angeles to protect his mother - Eileen - and younger brother Bruce (Sam Song Li).

Through Michelle Yeoh’s role, the filmmaker conveys a message of family love, promoting sacrifice and forgiveness. When seeing her two children standing at a crossroads, Eileen blames herself, wanting to solve the problem herself, and at the same time teach them to become good people. When dealing with the underworld , Eileen calmly negotiates, exuding the courage of a woman.
In an interview with Collider, the artist said that the depiction of conflict and dark corners in an immigrant family was the factor that attracted the actor to join the project. "From the beginning, the mother character has to make terrible choices to get the family to where they are today. When I read the script, I thought: 'This could be interesting,' because the things in the film are happening right before my eyes," said Michelle Yeoh.
