From there, it contributes to spreading a positive image so that people, especially the young generation, strive to practice and contribute to building and protecting the Fatherland.
As one of two typical examples (along with the head coach of the national Sepak Takraw team, Tran Thi Vui) reported at the Conference, Nguyen Thi Oanh, an athlete of the national Athletics team, said that she was discovered and nurtured from the school sports movement.
Although she had a chance to run since the summer of 4th grade, it was not until 8th grade that Oanh started training and competing in school and district-level athletics competitions. "The Bac Giang Newspaper Run - an annual race of Bac Giang province - is the tournament that brought me to high-performance sports," said Nguyen Thi Oanh.
During her journey to maturity in August 2010, Oanh was selected and recruited to Bac Giang Sports Talent School (now the Bac Giang Provincial Sports Training and Competition Center).
"At first, it was probably the joy and love of training with my peers; then gradually it became passion, love and the desire to train and compete. Perhaps that is also one of the motivations that has helped me stick with and accompany this sport of Athletics until now," Nguyen Thi Oanh recounted about her journey.
In 2012, Oanh was called up to the Youth Athletics Team at the Hanoi National Sports Training Center, now the National High-Level Athlete Training Center. With the attention and direction of leaders at all levels along with the guidance and instruction of coaches, Oanh was trained and improved every day.
Along with that are a series of remarkable achievements: In the youth age group, Oanh was honored to win a gold medal at the Asian Youth Championship, a silver medal at the 27th SEA Games and several other achievements.
In 2014, Oanh was called up to the national team. "But perhaps the end of 2014 and almost the whole of 2015 was a very sad time when I discovered that I had glomerulonephritis, could not continue to train, compete and had to miss the 28th SEA Games in Singapore.
I am also very lucky and happy to always have the care and encouragement of my family, teachers and friends by my side; besides the care of the National High-Level Athlete Training Center, the enthusiastic care and treatment from the Post Office Hospital, the affection that all those who love me have given me helped me overcome that time of crisis and return to my passion," Oanh shared.
When she was able to return to the National Athletics team, Oanh was more aware than anyone of this precious opportunity. With proper training, Oanh actively practiced and tried to complete her unfinished goals.
The 29th SEA Games in 2017 in Malaysia was a major turning point when Oanh won 2 gold medals. "This achievement not only helped me complete my mission but also gave me great motivation to continue my journey to conquer these goals," Oanh said.
She recalled: "In 2014, when I attended the send-off ceremony to cheer on the Vietnamese Sports Delegation to the Asian Games, I wished I could also participate in the biggest tournament in the continent and then the opportunity came when I was able to join the Vietnamese Sports Delegation to participate in the 18th ASIAD in 2018. I was honored to win a bronze medal and break the national record in the 3,000m steeplechase. This was an extremely surprising result and encouraged me."
Over the years, with the hard work of her teachers and teammates, Oanh has won 12 gold medals and holds 1 SEA Games record. At the National Sports Festival, Oanh won 7 gold medals, 1 silver medal and holds 4 Games records in the events: 1,500m, 5,000m, 3,000m obstacle course and 10,000m.
At the national championships, Oanh won her first gold medal in 2017 and has always tried to train and make efforts to protect and promote those results. And the reward for this resilient girl is 39 gold medals at the national championships, holding 5 national records in the 3,000m over CNV, 5,000m, 10,000m, Half Marathon and Marathon.
Those achievements have helped Oanh to be honored to be elected as the National Outstanding Athlete in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023; to be awarded the Second Class Labor Medal by the State in 2022, 2023 and the Third Class Labor Medal in 2018, 2019; along with many Certificates of Merit from the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism; Certificates of Merit from the Vietnam Olympic Committee, the Vietnam Confederation of Athletics, the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, the Vietnam Women's Union, the Vietnam Youth Union, the People's Committee of Bac Giang province,...
Nguyen Thi Oanh also shared that after many years of training at the Hanoi National Sports Training Center (now the National High-Level Athlete Training Center), she was educated and taught; in addition to expertise, soft skills in life to be able to improve every day.
"Those things have helped me become stronger, more courageous, overcome many difficulties and challenges, and also sweat, tears and injuries during training.
Sports came and changed my life. Sports helped me become more resilient, more courageous and more determined, helping me dare to face difficulties and challenges.
There is no path paved with roses, I hope that young people will always be persistent, brave and break through on their own path; dare to dream, dare to aspire and dare to conquer", Nguyen Thi Oanh's sharing is also a message to today's young generation, to make more efforts and strive on the chosen path to contribute to building and protecting the Fatherland.
