(BLC) - Actively building a smoke-free and e-cigarette-free school, Nung Nang Primary and Secondary School (Tam Duong district) has created a safe and healthyeducational environment for teachers and students to compete to teach well and study well.
Talking to us about the issue of building a smoke-free and e-cigarette-free school, Ms. Hoang Thi Bich Hue - Principal of Nung Nang Primary and Secondary School said: “Implementing the direction of the Ministry, Department, and Department of Education and Training (GD&DT) of Tam Duong district, in recent years, the school has promoted propaganda and education on prevention and control of the harmful effects of cigarettes and e-cigarettes on staff, teachers and students. The school thoroughly understands and strictly implements regulations on assessing the quality of staff and teachers who do not complete their tasks when smoking. From there, staff and teachers are an example, synchronously implementing many flexible and drastic solutions to prevent cigarettes and e-cigarettes from entering schools, affecting students' health".
No smoking signs are posted on campus.
Visiting Nung Nang Primary and Secondary School on a summer day in mid-June, we met staff and teachers still working hard at their computers, making plans for the new school year 2023 - 2024. The school has 47 staff, teachers and employees, including 16 male staff. Every year, the school makes propaganda work to prevent and combat the harmful effects of tobacco and e-cigarettes a regular activity, throughout the summer break.
The school's Board of Directors regularly integrates propaganda work, thoroughly informing 100% of staff and teachers to say no to cigarettes and e-cigarettes. Each staff and teacher always upholds the sense of responsibility to put the Law on Prevention and Control of Tobacco Harms into practice; promotes propaganda work, prevention and control of the harmful effects of cigarettes and e-cigarettes in flag-raising ceremonies, class activities and extracurricular activities outside of class hours. From there, helping students understand the harmful effects of cigarettes, e-cigarettes causing addiction, cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer that need to be avoided. From the above solutions, the school has gradually built a smoke-free school environment to reduce diseases related to cigarettes and e-cigarettes, protecting the health of the younger generation.
Teacher Nguyen The Nghia - Nung Nang Primary and Secondary School confided: “As a long-time teacher of the school, I myself am a role model, taking the lead in not smoking for students to follow. I propagate and remind students to understand that smoking and e-cigarettes not only directly affect smokers but also that cigarette smoke affects public health, causing many diseases, such as: esophageal cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and aortic aneurysm. Now, not only me but 100% of staff, teachers and students do not smoke, and can work and study in a healthy, green, clean and beautiful environment.”
Nung Nang is a purely agricultural commune, 100% of the Mong people live there. In the past, not only men smoked but women also smoked cigarettes and tobacco. Since then, it has had a significant impact on a number of students at Nung Nang Primary and Secondary School who consider smoking a movement. Faced with this situation, in recent years, the school has coordinated with the head and deputy head of the village to propagate and mobilize parents not to smoke; and to include the content of smoking bans in the evaluation of cultural family titles. Since then, people have voluntarily given up smoking habits, contributing to bringing the Law on Prevention and Control of Tobacco Harms into life to strictly prohibit their children and grandchildren from smoking cigarettes and electronic cigarettes.

Visiting the school yard, we met a group of students who were practicing for excellent students. Vang A Do - a student of class 8A1, Nung Nang Primary and Secondary School said: "At school, teachers propagated about the harmful effects of tobacco smoke, cigarettes, affecting health, race, cardiovascular diseases and lung cancer. From then on, I encouraged my grandparents to quit tobacco completely, contributing to building a clean, smoke-free family environment. I myself always improve my behavior and ethics, absolutely do not buy or try cigarettes or electronic cigarettes to protect the health of everyone around me."
With the above results, Nung Nang Primary and Secondary School has raised the sense of responsibility of staff, teachers and students in the work of preventing and combating the harmful effects of tobacco and electronic cigarettes, creating a friendly, civilized and modern pedagogical environment, contributing to improving the quality of local education and training.
