Accordingly, World Environment Day (June 5) in 2025 was launched by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) with the theme "Beat Plastic Pollution", calling on the global community to take drastic action to address plastic waste - one of the most urgent environmental challenges today. This is the second time in three years (2023-2025) that this theme has been chosen, clearly demonstrating the global priority in controlling plastic pollution, while reaffirming the commitment to using resources efficiently, protecting biodiversity, enhancing adaptability, promoting innovation and strengthening regional-global cooperation, towards a circular economy and sustainable development.
According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the world produces about 430 million tons of plastic each year, of which more than two-thirds are single-use plastics. In Vietnam, the amount of plastic waste generated is estimated at 1.8 million tons each year, but only about 27% is recycled. The majority of the remainder is buried or burned, causing serious harm to the environment and public health.
Responding to the call for action for the environment, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment issued Official Dispatch No. 2141/BNNMT-VP dated May 16, 2025 on organizing activities in response to World Environment Day (June 5) and the Month of Action for the Environment in 2025. Accordingly, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment guides the implementation of practical activities such as:

Encourage businesses to invest in research, transfer, and application of modern, high-efficiency recycling technology, saving resources, minimizing environmental risks and creating added value from waste. Prioritizing the application of high technology in agricultural and livestock production, to minimize the generation of plastic waste, especially from fertilizer packaging, pesticides, barn mats and other agricultural supplies, etc.
Third, organize the Peak Month of Action for the Environment in 2025 in conjunction with the national campaign "Join hands to reduce plastic waste - Spread green lifestyle" , aiming to mobilize the whole society to participate in practical, diverse and widespread activities. Key content: organize key activities such as: rallies, community forums, "No single-use plastic" day, collecting and sorting waste at source, exhibition of recycled products and circular economic models, launching the "No plastic" movement at schools, supermarkets, markets, offices, launching a mass campaign to clean up the environment, collect and sort plastic waste at source in urban, rural, residential areas, etc. All activities need to ensure systematicity - creativity - efficiency - associated with current legal regulations and the goal of changing sustainable behavior, thereby enhancing the responsibility of the community, businesses, authorities at all levels and individuals in reducing plastic pollution, promoting circular economy, creating green lifestyles.
