AFP news agency on May 16 quoted a Kremlin decree saying that President Vladimir Putin has just dismissed Russian Army Commander Oleg Salyukov, the latest move involving a high-ranking figure in the military amid the ongoing campaign in Ukraine.

The Kremlin did not give a reason and there is no information about a replacement.

Sắc lệnh của Điện Kremlin thông báo việc “bổ nhiệm ông Oleg Salyukov làm Phó thư ký Hội đồng an ninh Liên bang Nga, miễn nhiệm chức vụ hiện tại của ông”.
The Kremlin decree announced the “appointment of Oleg Salyukov as Deputy Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, relieving him of his current post.”

Mr. Salyukov, 70, will become deputy to Secretary of the Russian Security Council Sergei Shoigu. The Security Council is the Kremlin's top advisory body, chaired by President Putin, responsible for managing and integrating national security policy. It has no direct authority over Russia's security agencies.

Less than a week ago, Mr. Salyukov directed the Victory Day parade on Red Square with Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, marking the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany. He has been the officer in charge of the event for the past 11 years.

Before his resignation, Mr. Salyukov had been in charge of Russia’s ground forces since 2014, overseeing the Syrian civil war and the conflict in Ukraine. Before that, he was deputy chief of the general staff for four years.

Since January 2023, Mr. Salyukov has been deputy to Russian General Staff Chief Valery Gerasimov, who was appointed by Mr. Putin as commander in charge of Russia's campaign in Ukraine.
