President Trump affirms that he will continue to communicate with Mr. Kim Jong Un

(CLO) In an interview broadcast on January 23, US President Donald Trump affirmed that he is willing to maintain contact with Mr. Kim Jong Un.

During his presidency from 2017 to 2021, Mr. Trump built a rare relationship with Mr. Kim Jong Un. He not only met the leader in person but also said that the two "fell in love."

When asked on Fox News if he would continue to contact Mr. Kim in the future, Mr. Trump affirmed: "I will. He likes me."

“I get along with him,” said Mr Trump, who returned to the White House on January 20. “He’s not a religious fanatic.”

Mr Trump has repeatedly said he had a good relationship with Mr Kim during his first term as president, although their nuclear talks eventually collapsed in 2019. Mr Trump has also repeatedly hinted at a desire to rekindle diplomatic relations with North Korea.

Hours after taking office on January 20, Mr Trump described North Korea as a “nuclear power” and said he believed Mr Kim would be happy to see him return as president.

Mr Trump has previously described their relationship as “very, very good” and has called Kim “a smart guy” in the media. During his first term, Mr Trump met Mr Kim three separate times between 2018 and 2019.

In 2019, he made history by becoming the first sitting US president to visit North Korea since the 1953 armistice that formally ended the Korean War. After his re-election in November, Mr Trump's team said it was considering reopening "direct talks" with Mr Kim.
