ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn said that the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, adopted by ASEAN leaders, will serve as a bold yet realistic 20-year strategic roadmap to guide the region's development amid global uncertainties.
Speaking to reporters, the Secretary-General said that the new Vision reflects ASEAN's commitment to sustainable, long-term, inclusive recovery and continued cooperation with external partners.
Ten years ago, under the leadership of Malaysia, ASEAN leaders adopted the ASEAN Community Vision 2025, he said.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of implementation, and leaders are embarking on the Next 20-Year Vision, with a doubling of time and ambition.
The Secretary-General said the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 is underpinned by strategic plans based on four pillars: Political -Security, Economic, Social-Cultural and Connectivity.

He stressed that this is not just a vision on paper but is designed to guide ASEAN in identifying work priorities while maintaining ASEAN unity, solidarity and centrality.
The Secretary-General also said that the roadmap also recognises the need to work closely with external partners, including dialogue partners, partners and global actors.
According to the ASEAN Secretary-General, the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 takes into account both the challenges and opportunities posed by global megatrends, to provide practical and strategic responses for the next two decades.
The document is a vision and strategy, while acknowledging the changing geopolitics, digitalization, demographics, climate risks and other pressing issues, clearly shaping how ASEAN should navigate the region’s future.
Referring to the growing cooperation with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and China, especially through the upcoming ASEAN-GCC-China Summit, Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn said the trilateral cooperation opens up new space for deeper economic cooperation.
Each region has its own strengths and ASEAN is always looking to strengthen existing partnerships while identifying new areas where it can leverage common interests.
He stressed that ASEAN sees great potential in enhancing cooperation with the GCC and China, and this summit marks an important initiative in creating new opportunities through multilateral economic cooperation.
Earlier, Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the adoption of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 marks the beginning of a collective effort for the future, reaffirming a shared commitment to a more resilient, innovative and dynamic ASEAN that is people-centred.
He described the document as a bold ambition to transform ASEAN into a resilient, innovative and people-oriented community, stressing that it is not just a ceremonial document.
