Recently, according to the survey "City Pulse 2025 - The Magnetic City", Ho Chi Minh City is ranked among the cities with the best resident retention in the world. This is a survey conducted by Gensler Research Institute, a highly reliable study, conducted periodically over many years on an expanded scale.
Ho Chi Minh City entered the top for the first time
On July 29, speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Le Truong Hien Hoa, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism , said that this is the first time the city has been ranked among the best cities in the world for retaining residents and is very meaningful to Ho Chi Minh City and to the Vietnamese tourism industry in general.
"The fact that Ho Chi Minh City ranked 2nd in the City Pulse 2025 survey, just behind Taipei and surpassing many developed cities such as Singapore, Sydney or Berlin, is a very commendable signal.
More importantly than the ranking, this result shows that Ho Chi Minh City is not only a place to work or travel, but has become a place worth staying, living in and inspiring residents in the long term," said Mr. Hoa.
As for Vietnam’s tourism industry, according to Mr. Hoa, this is an opportunity to re-evaluate the sustainable value of a destination. Tourism is no longer about short trips, but about life experiences and emotional connections.
The leader of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism emphasized: "A city that retains its residents is a place that has the ability to retain tourists, especially long-term visitors, international experts, and young people traveling globally. This result is an important foundation for Ho Chi Minh City and the whole country's tourism to position itself as a modern urban image with cultural identity and depth."
Ho Chi Minh City scores high in 5 outstanding emotional factors
According to the report of Gensler Research Institute, the unit conducting the City Pulse 2025 survey, the results were compiled from more than 33,000 residents in 65 cities worldwide. In which, Ho Chi Minh City is one of the representatives of the Asia-Pacific region.
Each participant was evaluated on 152 factors, ranging from urban amenities, living environment, transportation infrastructure to personal feelings, pride and attachment to the city.
According to Mr. Hoa, it is noteworthy that Ho Chi Minh City scored high not in traditional infrastructure criteria, but in 5 outstanding emotional factors.
Those are 5 emotions:
- Don't feel bored living in the city,
- Feels like home,
- Proud of my city,
- The city is a place where you can stay for a long time,
- The level of attachment between residents and the city deepens over time.
"Ho Chi Minh City achieved a rate of 61% of residents saying they had "little or no intention of leaving", reflecting a deeper layer of urban value that creates a sense of belonging, not only providing amenities but also nurturing the spirit of living", Mr. Hoa added about the city's achievement level through this survey.
Significance to Ho Chi Minh City in the development strategy of many fields, including tourism
Gensler is one of the world's leading organizations in the fields of urban design, architecture and resident behavior research. Gensler's survey does not simply measure satisfaction, but delves into emotional factors such as belonging, pride and the desire to continue living in the city long term.
Top 10 cities in the world that retain residents: Taipei is in first place with a rate of 64%, second place is Ho Chi Minh City with a rate of 61%, followed by Singapore, Sydney (Australia), Berlin, Monterrey (Mexico), Munich (Munich, Germany), Sao Paulo (Brazil), Vancouver (Canada), Seoul (Korea).
According to Mr. Hoa, Ho Chi Minh City's inclusion in the top this time has special value, especially in the context of Ho Chi Minh City expanding its urban space, repositioning its brand and development strategy in many fields, including tourism.
Ho Chi Minh City is no longer a city that only attracts people to settle down for the short term. The city is gradually becoming a place to live long term, which is an advantage for sustainable tourism development.
