On August 15, speaking at the ceremony to honor excellent students in the 2024-2025 school year, Ms. Tran Thi Dieu Thuy, Vice Chairwoman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, emphasized that after the merger, Ho Chi Minh City has a number of specialized high schools that are not commensurate with the large total student population of the entire city. In particular, the city does not have a specialized high school that trains in arts subjects.
"I suggest that the education sector should pay attention to this issue and consult with city leaders to develop some schools into specialized high schools, contributing to building the city into a cultural industrial center of the country," said Ms. Thuy.
In addition, Ms. Thuy also requested the city's education and training sector to research and develop a strategic plan to exploit the strengths of current specialized high schools.
Specifically, continuing to carry out enrollment nationwide. The goal is to attract excellent students, promote healthy competition, help specialized high schools select truly excellent students, contributing to the development of high-quality human resources for the city and the whole country.
According to the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, after merging with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau , Ho Chi Minh City currently has 5 specialized high schools including: Le Hong Phong Specialized High School (under the management of the former Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City); Tran Dai Nghia Specialized High School (under the management of the former Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City); Gifted High School under the National University of Ho Chi Minh City; Le Quy Don Specialized High School (under the former Department of Education and Training of Ba Ria - Vung Tau); Hung Vuong Specialized High School (under the former Department of Education and Training of Binh Duong).
Among these, there are 3 specialized schools recruiting students nationwide: Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted and Talented High School.
Which schools are eligible to convert to specialized high schools?
According to education experts, currently in Ho Chi Minh City there are many high schools with good educational quality, the rate of students winning prizes in excellent student competitions is quite high. However, when converting from a normal high school to a specialized high school, there needs to be synchronous investment in facilities, training and development of teachers, strategies to attract excellent students to study...
A leader of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training said that the high school with the most favorable conditions to be converted into a specialized school is Nguyen Thuong Hien High School. This is the school with the second highest 10th grade admission score in the city for many years.
