On August 15th, speaking at the ceremony honoring outstanding students of the 2024-2025 school year, Ms. Tran Thi Dieu Thuy, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, emphasized that after the merger, Ho Chi Minh City has a number of specialized high schools that is not commensurate with the very large total number of students in the entire city. In particular, the city does not yet have a specialized high school that trains students in the arts.

"I suggest that the education sector should pay attention to this issue and advise the city's leaders on how to develop some schools into specialized high schools, contributing to building the city into a national center of industry and culture," Ms. Thuy said.

In addition, Ms. Thuy also suggested that the city's education and training sector research and develop a strategic plan to exploit the strengths of the current specialized high schools.

Specifically, this involves continuing nationwide student recruitment. The goal is to attract talented students, promote healthy competition, help specialized high schools select truly outstanding students, and contribute to the development of high-quality human resources for the city and the country.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, after merging with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Ho Chi Minh City currently has 5 specialized high schools: Le Hong Phong Specialized High School (under the management of the former Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training); Tran Dai Nghia Specialized High School (under the management of the former Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training); the Gifted High School under the National University of Ho Chi Minh City; Le Quy Don Specialized High School (under the former Ba Ria - Vung Tau Department of Education and Training); and Hung Vuong Specialized High School (under the former Binh Duong Department of Education and Training).

Among these are three specialized high schools that recruit students nationwide: Le Hong Phong Specialized High School, Tran Dai Nghia Specialized High School, and the Gifted High School.

Which schools are eligible to be converted into specialized high schools?

According to education experts, Ho Chi Minh City currently has many high schools with good educational quality and a high percentage of students winning awards in academic competitions. However, the transition from a regular high school to a specialized high school requires comprehensive investment in facilities, teacher training and development, and strategies to attract talented students.

A leader from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training stated that the high school with the most favorable conditions to be converted into a specialized school currently is Nguyen Thuong Hien High School. This school has had one of the highest entrance exam scores for 10th grade in the city for many years.
