Ho Chi Minh City plans to develop riverside service economy

Saigon River through the center of Ho Chi Minh City

In the project to develop river embankments and riverside service economy recently issued by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the city identifies and builds a map of the locations of existing river embankments on the Saigon River, proposes to exploit and effectively promote land resources in areas along the river, ensuring a balance of land resources for construction investment, while improving the landscape, natural environment, and responding to climate change in the area.

In addition, the city also reviewed the construction planning and land use planning along the Saigon River within the riverbank protection corridor. Building an integrated database (wharfs, technical infrastructure, riverbank protection embankments, potential development locations, connecting bridges, etc.) based on information from industry management projects, tourism development programs, agricultural and industrial management, and planning projects, etc., synchronizing policies and plans to connect and propose ideas for adjusting the river corridor development planning.

Coordinate with relevant units to ensure a legal corridor for management and use regulations to promptly adjust and complete plans for building temporary and permanent embankments, green infrastructure, and riverside traffic; especially have policies to support and encourage investors, prioritize the implementation of public works such as boat parking lots, commerce, services, and parks.

The city will cooperate internationally to research planning strategies, development management, and propose green infrastructure models (technical infrastructure and social infrastructure) to effectively use the corridor along the Saigon River.

According to the City People's Committee, the effective implementation of the plan to deploy the project to develop river embankments and riverside service economy in Ho Chi Minh City, period 2020-2025, aims to meet the tasks and work contents set out, orienting the implementation roadmap in the next period.

The project also aims to promote the cultural, historical and ecological values that create the characteristics of the city in order to increase the attractiveness and potential for economic and service development along the Saigon River. On the basis of reviewing, researching and perfecting the mechanism and planning as a basis for implementing investment projects to build riverbank embankments and multifunctional green infrastructure to improve the urban environment, contributing to the process of economic restructuring of knowledge and high-tech services.
