My Tho City: Urgently plant Tet flower crop

Việt NamViệt Nam16/10/2023

Currently, flower growers in My Tho City, Tien Giang Province are urgently planting flowers for Tet. Due to forecasts that consumption will not increase, some households have reduced the number of plants planted.

These days, despite the unfavorable weather, farmers in My Tho City are still urgently planting flowers to serve the 2024 Lunar New Year market. This year, flower growers choose to plant flowers that are easy to sell and have prices suitable for customers' economic conditions such as chrysanthemums, marigolds, etc. Depending on each type of flower, the planting time is different.

According to records in the communes on the outskirts of My Tho City such as My Phong, Tan My Chanh... and Ward 9, at this time, farmers are focusing on planting Dutch chrysanthemums, yellow chrysanthemums, Indo chrysanthemums... In Tan My Chanh commune, up to this point, some households have finished planting chrysanthemums.

Mr. Chin Long (Tan My Chanh commune) said that in the 2023 Tet flower crop, the flower consumption situation was favorable, and his family's Tet flowers were almost all purchased by traders in the fields, so he earned a good profit. However, according to Mr. Chin Long, in the 2024 Tet flower crop, the consumption situation is forecasted to be not very positive due to the impact of the economic recession. Therefore, the family has reduced the number of flowers planted by 20%.

“Up to this point, I have planted about 3,000 baskets of Dutch chrysanthemums and some baskets of Ruby and Calimero chrysanthemums. Some other types of flowers, such as marigolds, will be planted near Tet. Overall, this year, input costs such as fertilizers and pesticides are still high. Not to mention, the price of flower seeds has also increased by about 100 VND/plant. With the above difficulties as well as market forecasts, the number of flowers planted has decreased. My family has reduced planting by 20%, which is low, but some households have reduced by about 50%,” Mr. Chin Long added.

Also recorded at My Phong Flower Village (My Phong Commune), at this time, flower farmers are actively planting chrysanthemums of all kinds. When we arrived, it was also the time when Ms. Tu's family (My Hoa Hamlet, My Phong Commune) was planting more than 4,000 pots of chrysanthemums of all kinds. This year, the price of flower seeds increased by about 100 VND/plant, so input costs are expected to increase compared to last year.

Also in My Phong commune, at this time, Mr. Nguyen Van Bach's family has planted 4,000 baskets of Dutch and Indo chrysanthemums. According to Mr. Bach, last year's Tet flower crop, the market was flooded with flowers, so consumption was also affected. However, in general, his family still made a profit from the Tet flower crop.

“This year, the price of flower seeds increased by about 50 VND/plant. Due to the forecast of difficult situations, all households have reduced the number of plants. My family alone has reduced about 500 baskets. At this time, farmers have almost finished planting chrysanthemums. As for other flowers such as cockscombs and marigolds, we will only plant them near Tet. With the current difficult situation, we do not know how the consumption of Tet flowers will be this year,” Mr. Bach shared.

According to Mr. Truong Van Nhung, Head of the My Phong Fresh Flower Cooperative, up to this point, farmers have planted about 20,000 pots of raspberry chrysanthemums; this month alone, about 300,000 pots of Dutch chrysanthemums have been planted. These are the types that traders prefer and buy a lot. Mr. Nhung added: “It has rained a lot in the past few days, but the sun is also harsh. Agricultural supplies have decreased compared to last year, but are still at a high level. It is expected that the number of pots planted for Tet flowers by the cooperative this year will be about 800,000 pots.”
