Like many localities in the province, storm No. 3 caused serious damage in Uong Bi City. In the face of difficulties, Uong Bi responded and promptly overcame them, minimizing damage and preserving development achievements. This is the foundation for the city to confidently complete its tasks for the whole year of 2024.

Storm No. 3 caused many construction works to have their roofs blown off and collapsed, many large trees were broken and felled, many areas of crops and livestock were damaged... More seriously, more than 700 households had their houses submerged in water and mud. Racing against time, the city urgently held a meeting, agreeing on the fastest and most drastic ways to respond to the storm's situations, including demolishing the Sinh River spillway and the bridge and spillway of the Power Plant to drain the water. Mr. Mai Vu Tuan, Secretary of the Uong Bi City Party Committee, spoke at a quick meeting at that time: "We do not put people's lives on the line to wait for a mechanism. In an emergency, when people need us to respond immediately, we must act immediately and act in the highest spirit to protect people's lives and property".
The two spillways of the Sinh River and the Uong Bi Power Plant bridge and spillway have their own functions under normal conditions. However, under stormy conditions, they become obstacles to the flow, contributing to the rising flood, which can increasingly submerge many houses. The order to demolish these structures is timely and effective. Because as soon as there are no more obstacles, the flow of the central lake area of the Sinh River and the flow of Vang Danh stream to the river system is promoted, the water recedes quickly, not only eliminating the risk of expanding the flooded area in the city center, but also effectively resolving the flooding situation that was occurring at a very serious level at that time...
The city's timely decision was in line with the people's wishes and was supported by them. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hoang (Zone 6, Bac Son Ward) said: At that time, people in Zone 9 (Quang Trung Ward), Zone 5, 6 (Bac Son Ward) were in the most serious flood situation, with some houses being flooded up to 4m. People had to go up to the second floor, climb onto the roof to avoid the rising water. We, the people, needed a solution to completely resolve the flooding situation. Therefore, we agreed that the Sinh River spillway and the bridge and the Power Plant spillway were demolished. The government understood the people and found the right solution to solve the core problem.
Maintain and promote the achieved results
In the first 9 months of 2024, the city achieved many impressive results, creating strong movements in socio -economic development. Mr. Pham Tuan Dat, Chairman of the City People's Committee, said: The outstanding results include the Uong Bi Party Committee conducting 748 inspections and supervisions, reaching 95% of the plan, of which 696 were completed, a number that shows a huge workload and working spirit. The city admitted 246 new party members, reaching 85% of the plan, an increase of 11% over the same period in 2023, including 4 party members who are students...
Up to now, Uong Bi is one of the leading localities in the province in disbursing public investment capital, with a total disbursed capital of nearly 200 billion VND, reaching over 70% of the annual plan; total state budget revenue of nearly 2,800 billion VND, equal to 74% of the provincial and municipal estimates. The targets for industrial production, agriculture, tourism development, transportation, etc. all met the set targets. The fields of health, education, and culture of Uong Bi became a bright spot with the first provincial hospital, Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital, successfully performing an organ donation to save 7 people; the Uong Bi Education sector achieved achievements in key education; the system of tangible and intangible heritages was preserved and honored, including bringing the value of Yen Tu heritage to a new level. The work of ensuring security and order and traffic safety was resolutely implemented. The City Police is the pioneer in implementing the model of "Drug-free communes and wards" for 4 communes and wards; building the models of "Basic security", "Security cameras", and the special security model "For the peaceful Yen Tu scenic area". The City Military Command effectively implements the work of military recruitment, national defense and security, search and rescue, etc.
The results achieved are the driving force for the city to raise its determination to complete and exceed the socio-economic targets for 2024. The city will promote the achieved results, continue to improve the quality of teaching and learning; raise awareness, protect and be proud of Yen Tu heritage; effectively overcome the damage caused by storm No. 3, support businesses to return to strong operations, bring people's lives back to normal; increase budget revenue, increase disbursement of public investment capital, increase security and order assurance... In the last 3 months of the year, the city will adjust implementation solutions, prioritizing the construction of projects to respond to climate change, such as dredging rivers and streams, clearing the flow; mobilizing human and material resources to help people and businesses overcome the damage caused by the storm.
