Việt NamViệt Nam23/06/2024

The price of dried coconuts in Tien Giang province in the first months of the year has increased again, helping coconut growers earn high profits and be excited to invest in and take care of their coconut gardens.

In the largest coconut growing area of Tien Giang province, Cho Gao district, traders come to buy dry coconuts at the price of 60,000 - 85,000 VND/dozen (12 fruits), double (40,000 VND/dozen) compared to a few months ago. Mr. Nguyen Van Dung in Binh Ninh commune, Cho Gao district has just harvested 0.8 hectares of coconuts with 1,400 fruits, sold for 85,000 VND/dozen, earning a profit of more than 8 million VND.

Cho Gao district currently has over 8,124 hectares of coconut, an increase of 5.57% over the same period in 2023, of which the area of coconut trees bearing fruit is 7,035 hectares, with an estimated harvest output in the first 6 months of 2024 of 45,025 tons. According to coconut growers in Tien Giang province, coconut trees do not require care and investment costs (fertilizers, pesticides) like other crops, so with an average selling price of 50,000 VND/dozen or more, growers have a relatively stable profit.

In order to promote the potential and strengths of coconut trees in commodity agriculture , the People's Committee of Cho Gao district issued Plan No. 91/KH-UBND dated January 11, 2022 on developing specialized coconut production areas until 2025 and the following years. The locality encourages farmers to change their habits, widely apply intensive agricultural science and technology, and switch to organic coconut cultivation to improve the quality and value of coconut products on the market. In the district, there are currently 78 cooperatives, 6 cooperatives, 4 enterprises and 30 facilities purchasing and processing related products from coconuts.

In order to achieve the goal of having 4,000 hectares of organic coconut production in the district by 2025, up to now, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Cho Gao district has surveyed 242 hectares in Binh Ninh, Xuan Dong and Hoa Dinh communes. After many steps, the district has selected qualified households to implement the project first. The consulting unit has surveyed and evaluated an area of 109.6 hectares of coconut in Binh Ninh commune (16.86 hectares), Xuan Dong commune (51.43 hectares), and Hoa Dinh commune (41.32 hectares).

Mr. Nguyen Van Man, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Giang province, said: To exploit the development potential of coconut trees, the Department of Agriculture will propose to the Provincial People's Committee for policies to coordinate with related departments and localities to develop a project to develop coconut trees in the province. In the coming time, Tien Giang province will establish cooperatives so that coconut growers must participate in cooperatives as well as closely link with businesses. Related departments and branches will support cooperatives and coconut growers to build brands and link consumption...

One of the favorable conditions for the potential development of coconut trees in Tien Giang province is that Thabico Tien Giang Food Industry Joint Stock Company has invested in a fruit processing factory and coconut products in Binh Ninh commune, Cho Gao district with a processing capacity of 300,000 coconuts/day and night, ready to purchase organic coconuts for farmers.

According to statistics, the total coconut area of Tien Giang province currently reaches 21,654 hectares, with a fruit-bearing area of 18,116 hectares, a yield of 13.5 tons/hectare, and an output of 244,115 tons/year. From 2015 to now, the coconut area has increased by 5,749 hectares, with an average growth rate of 4.5%/year. According to statistics, when coconut trees enter the stable harvest stage, coconut growers earn an average profit of about 91.2 million VND/hectare/year.
