The duck catching game was held at 2:00 p.m. on February 21 (January 12), at the pond in front of Lai Yen communal house yard (Lai Yen commune, Hoai Duc district, Hanoi ).
According to Dan Viet reporters, a large number of spectators arrived early, surrounding the pond, cheering on the village athletes.
According to the concept of Lai Yen villagers, the duck catching contest is to pray for good irrigation, good crops, and healthy and talented children.
According to the announcement of the Organizing Committee, this year there will be nearly 30 teams participating in duck swimming, a higher number than in previous years.
Therefore, each team will only have 10 minutes to swim and catch ducks instead of 15 minutes like previous years.
Each duck catching team will consist of 3 people. The young men must be really skillful to be able to herd and catch ducks in a large lake.
The underwater duck swimming was extremely exciting as the ducks continuously flew and dived underwater, causing difficulties for the teams.
Because there were so many spectators and no more standing space, some people had to climb tall trees to watch and cheer.
The teams competed to the cheers and encouragement of the audience.
The easiest way to catch a duck is to swim slowly, corner it, and then the whole team rushes to catch it.
The village's sponsors will award prizes of 100,000 VND or more. The more difficult the catch, the higher the prize. There have even been times when the prize was up to 10 million VND. Ms. Bich (a local resident) said that in 2023, a duck was offered a reward of 100,000 VND up to 15 million VND.
One team was exhausted while participating in duck swimming and had to give up.
It is known that the duck catching game has been going on for hundreds of years, passed down from generation to generation, with some families having participated in the competition for three generations. This is an indispensable spiritual dish in the early spring festivals of Lai Yen commune.
