Technology has become indispensable, especially for the younger generation. A group of students in Bradford, UK, challenged themselves to remove technology from their bedrooms for five days to explore the impact of reducing digital device usage.

Elizabeth (13 years old) said that after school, she usually runs straight to her bedroom and spends 3-4 hours watching videos of her idol or chatting with friends. However, when participating in this challenge, Elizabeth was forced to give up that habit.
Michelle (15 years old) plans to get through the difficult time by reading books. She hopes this will help her sleep easier instead of staying up late using her phone and computer, a habit that causes her to lack sleep.
“I usually only sleep a maximum of five hours,” Michelle said.
Despite the challenges, students who took part in the challenge quickly saw significant improvements in their technology use, and began to adjust their habits for the better.
After just a few days of taking part in the challenge, Elizabeth found that being away from technology was a rewarding experience. While bored, she took ballet lessons and even tried baking bread.
“If I still spend time using technology, I will definitely put off baking until next week,” Elizabeth affirms.
Elizabeth’s parents have also noticed a positive change. Instead of watching videos online in her room, she has chosen to watch documentaries on TV with her family. “The challenge has helped her realize that there are many other things to do besides using her phone and computer,” Robin said.
In addition to reducing dependence on technology, “detoxing” from technology also helps improve health.

Henry (13 years old), who used to spend hours playing games in his bedroom, also noticed positive changes after the challenge.
“Before, I used to stay up until 2am playing games, but now I can sleep much better,” Henry shared.
The boy also said that not being caught up in watching countless videos on TikTok before going to bed also helped him have a deeper sleep.
A study shows that today's teenagers face many problems related to excessive use of technology. Especially the blue light from phone screens at night can affect sleep quality and overall health.
An online survey in the US, with 2,000 teenagers (aged 13 to 18) participating, showed that 38% of "gamers" usually spend 7 hours or more per week playing games in their bedrooms. The survey also showed that 1 in 10 people often spend more than 20 hours per week, just staying in their rooms and avoiding family members.
About 39% of people would consider removing technology from the bedroom to reduce screen time, and 25% said their parents had set limits on technology use.
Tech companies have also introduced measures to help young users limit their screen time, such as time limit features on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.
