As children get older, their rate of weight gain slows down.

Dr. Huynh Thi Diem Kieu, from the General Planning Department of Children's Hospital 2 (Ho Chi Minh City), answered: As children grow older, their weight gain slows down. In the first month after birth, children may gain 1-1.3 kg; from the 3rd to the 6th month, they gain about 0.6 kg/month; from the 6th to the 12th month, they gain about 0.3-0.4 kg/month; after 1 year old, they gain 2 kg/year.

For young children, if your child's weight is stagnant or slow to gain weight, you need to check if they are getting enough milk (do they sleep well after feeding, what is the color and amount of their urine like...). Breastfed babies usually have soft, yellow stools with a slightly sour smell, and may have bowel movements 3-4 times a day. If the stool changes in consistency, such as being green, mucousy, or containing blood, or if the child has watery stools more frequently than usual, you need to take your child to the doctor to find the cause and receive timely treatment.

In a child's early years, breast milk is the only and most complete source of nutrition for their development. However, if mothers are frequently stressed, anxious, or have poor eating habits, their breast milk quality will be compromised, leading to slower weight gain, bone development, and height growth in their children.

To understand your child's health status and make timely adjustments, you should take your child for regular health checkups so that doctors can advise and provide solutions to help your child stay healthy, gain weight, and develop comprehensively.
