Venerable Thich Quang Duc, birth name Lam Van Tuat, was born in 1897. On June 11, 1963, he doused himself in gasoline and burned himself to death at the intersection of Phan Dinh Phung Avenue and Le Van Duyet Street (now Nguyen Dinh Chieu - Cach Mang Thang Tam intersection) in Saigon, to protest the repression of Buddhism by the Ngo Dinh Diem government, witnessed by thousands of people and Buddhists.
The photos taken of the monk's self-immolation quickly resonated around the world , contributing to the end of the persecution of Buddhism and the end of the war in Vietnam.
