North Korea says military cooperation between the US, South Korea and Japan is dangerous and could lead to World War III.
"We have established the strongest response strategy by equipping nuclear weapons to defend the sovereignty and interests of our people against the war waged by the US and the countries that stand on the US side," Rodong Sinmun , the mouthpiece of the North Korean Workers' Party, said on November 5, referring to the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
The paper warned that trilateral military cooperation between the US, South Korea and Japan has entered a "very dangerous phase" and no one can guarantee it will not lead to "nuclear war and World War III".
Rodong Sinmun called North Korea's military activities "self-defense", aimed at protecting peace and stability in the region as well as defending Pyongyang against "enemy aggression".

North Korea's state news agency KCNA on November 4 also criticized the three-way military alliance of the US, South Korea and Japan as a potential factor that could push the situation on the Korean peninsula "into an uncontrollable phase."
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have recently escalated due to increased military activity in the region. North Korea has been testing weapons and in September its parliament amended its constitution to include a policy of building a nuclear force. Pyongyang has repeatedly condemned military exercises between the US, South Korea and Japan in the region, accusing the alliance of being hostile and seeking regime change in North Korea.
The United States, South Korea and Japan last month held their first joint maritime security drills in seven years in waters south of the Korean Peninsula, aimed at deterring threats from North Korea. South Korea and its allies have repeatedly said the exercises in the region are purely defensive in nature.
