North Korea closes another embassy

North Korea has closed its embassies in Bangladesh and the Democratic Republic of Congo, following a series of closures of diplomatic missions abroad.

Yonhap reported on November 29 that North Korea is preparing to close its embassy in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Pyongyang did not give a reason for the closure, but said that its diplomatic mission in Ethiopia would take over Congolese affairs.

Since North Korea established diplomatic relations with the Central African nation of the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1964, the two sides have maintained close ties, mainly through arms exports and gold mining.

North Korea last week closed its embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and announced that its diplomatic mission in India would also handle Bangladesh affairs, sources familiar with the matter said.

North Korea and Bangladesh established diplomatic relations in 1973. Before the closure of the embassy, ​​the North Korean diplomatic mission in Bangladesh consisted of four people.

North Korea previously attracted attention when it closed a series of diplomatic missions abroad, including in Angola, Uganda, Nepal, Spain and the Hong Kong special administrative region.

South Korea said the move was due to North Korea's financial difficulties. However, Pyongyang insisted it was a normal change to "match changes in the international environment and foreign policies."

North Korea has diplomatic relations with more than 150 countries, but the number of overseas missions has been significantly reduced since the 1990s due to financial constraints, according to South Korea's Unification Ministry.
