Early this morning (June 29), the construction team of District 1 People's Committee installed the nameplate of Saigon Ward instead of the nameplate of District 1 People's Committee headquarters. Implementing the two-level local government model, District 1, with nearly 50 years of establishment and development, is now arranged into 4 wards: Saigon, Tan Dinh, Ben Thanh, Cau Ong Lanh.
Notably, the headquarters of the Party Committee - People's Council - People's Committee of Saigon Ward - one of the key wards of Ho Chi Minh City is located at 45-47 Le Duan, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1 (current headquarters of District 1 People's Committee).
Sai Gon Ward is the central ward of Ho Chi Minh City, arranged on the basis of merging the entire natural area and population size of Ben Nghe Ward and part of the natural area and population size of Da Kao Ward and Nguyen Thai Binh Ward.
Sai Gon Ward is limited by Hoang Sa, Nguyen Dinh Chieu, Hai Ba Trung, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, Vo Van Kiet, Ton Duc Thang streets and Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal with an area of over 3km2 and more than 47,000 people.

According to the People's Committee of District 1, the place name Saigon - there are many hypotheses, however the most popular is from the Khmer name for a type of cotton tree (prey nokor - cotton tree forest). Over time, the sound "prey nokor" gradually changed to "Sai Gon". This name was made official when Lord Nguyen Anh built Gia Dinh citadel.
Ho Chi Minh City has a history of administrative management of more than 300 years, since 1698 when Nguyen Huu Canh established Gia Dinh Palace. Over that time, this place has had many different names used to refer to the entire land or a part of the area such as Saigon, Cho Lon, Gia Dinh, Ben Nghe, Phan Yen, Phien An. Of which, Saigon is the most popular name in administrative management as well as community cultural life.

By 1976, the name Ho Chi Minh City was used to name Saigon - Gia Dinh city, whose boundaries were merged from the former Saigon capital and Gia Dinh province.
The place name Saigon is the name that has been associated with this land before it was officially named Ho Chi Minh City after 1975. This is a long-standing cultural and historical symbol, associated with the memories and consciousness of many generations of urban residents. It is a name widely used in literature, art, and daily life, with widespread influence and easy recognition both domestically and internationally.
Ho Chi Minh City recently organized a series of activities to celebrate the 327th anniversary of the formation of Saigon - Cho Lon - Gia Dinh - Ho Chi Minh City (1698-2025) and the 49th anniversary of the day Saigon - Gia Dinh City was officially honored to be named after President Ho Chi Minh (July 2, 1976 - July 2, 2025).
