Display of rare book Karl Marx gave Charles Darwin in 1873

German philosopher, economist , sociologist and journalist of Jewish origin Karl Marx sent the father of evolution theory Charles Darwin his book Das Kapital ( Capital ), an analysis and criticism of capitalism. He personally wrote on the opening page: "From your sincere admirer, Karl Marx".

English Heritage, the charity that looks after Darwin's home in Kent, southeast England, said most of the book's pages were intact, according to Reuters .

The charity English Heritage confirmed that it took Charles Darwin nearly three months to write a reply.

The book has now returned to Down House, the house where Darwin developed his revolutionary theory of evolution by natural selection. It has been preserved by Cambridge University Library to prevent further deterioration over time.

“As well as giving us a fascinating insight into the motivations of these two famous intellectuals, Das Kapital is a wonderful piece of history,” said Tessa Kilgarriff, collections curator at English Heritage.

In a letter replying to Karl Marx, Darwin wrote that he wished he had been more worthy of the "honor" of receiving Das Kapital , by understanding the subject matter better.

Charles Darwin wrote: "Although our studies are very different, I believe that we are both earnestly desirous of extending knowledge, and that in the long run this will surely lead to the happiness of mankind."
