On the WeChat messaging app, MSS stated that they have noticed this trend increasing in recent years.
In one instance, a foreign intelligence agency gained control of a Chinese company's server. The server remained in the company's computer lab even though it was no longer in use. The intelligence agency then launched its attack through this server.
In another instance, a camera surveillance platform was hacked. Analysis revealed that the platform's servers stored usernames and passwords for numerous cameras. The system had not been maintained or updated for a long time, leading to a high risk of data leakage.

MSS stated that if espionage agencies gain control of the platform, they could manipulate the cameras and use them to steal secrets. Meanwhile, network gateways could also be controlled by foreign agencies to log into servers and launch attacks.
MSS warns that as Chinese network equipment is upgraded, the risks associated with idle equipment also increase. Units with access to highly confidential information should better manage these devices and provide better training for personnel to conduct regular inspections, preventing potential leaks.
Additionally, MSS stated that it is necessary to inspect idle devices in the information system, close unused ports, and patch any security vulnerabilities.
"Chinese citizens and organizations are urged to cooperate with national security agencies to prevent and investigate cyber espionage activities. They should enhance their knowledge of cybersecurity, raise awareness, and build a safety net," the MSS report stated.
In August, the MSS opened a WeChat account and has since warned the public about the dangers of certain daily activities, saying that foreign spy agencies have exploited them to infiltrate companies and steal secrets, or to turn Chinese citizens against their authorities.
