On the messaging app WeChat, MSS said it has seen this trend increase in recent years.
In one case, a foreign spy agency took control of a Chinese company's server. The server was still in the company's computer room even though it was no longer in use. The spy agency launched an attack through this server.
In another case, a camera surveillance platform was hacked. Analysis found that the platform’s server stored usernames and passwords for many cameras. The system had not been maintained or updated for a long time, leading to a high risk of data leakage.

MSS said that if spy agencies gain control of the platform, they can control the cameras and use them to steal secrets. Meanwhile, network ports can also be controlled by foreign agencies to log into the server and attack.
MSS warned that as China's network equipment is upgraded, the risks associated with idle equipment are also increasing. Units with access to classified information should better manage such equipment and better train staff to conduct regular checks to prevent the risk of leaks.
Additionally, MSS said it is necessary to check for idle devices in the information system, close unused ports and plug any security holes.
“Chinese citizens and organizations are required to cooperate with national security agencies to prevent and investigate cyber espionage activities. They should enhance their knowledge of cybersecurity, raise awareness, and build a safety network,” the MSS report said.
In August, the MSS opened a WeChat account and has since warned the public about the dangers of some of its daily activities, saying foreign spy agencies have used them to infiltrate companies and steal secrets, or turn Chinese citizens against their government.
