China records hottest year on record

VnExpressVnExpress02/01/2024

China says average temperatures in 2023 were the hottest since records began.

The average national temperature in 2023 is 10.7 degrees Celsius, surpassing the record of 10.5 degrees Celsius set in 2021, state broadcaster CCTV reported today, citing the National Climate Center of China. "Temperatures in all regions across the country are 0.5-1 degrees Celsius higher."

China's 127 national weather stations recorded record high daily temperatures in 2023. Beijing recorded 27 consecutive days above 35 degrees Celsius in July, breaking a 23-year record. The Chinese capital then had its hottest day on record in late October.

In addition to record heat, northern China has been hit by devastating floods this year. Winter has also been unusually cold, with many areas recording record low December temperatures, prompting warnings from authorities.

"2024 may be hotter and extreme weather may occur more frequently and more intensely," Zhou Bing, chief expert at China's National Climate Center, predicted in late December.

The world in 2023 will also see many extreme events such as heat waves, droughts, and wildfires. Scientists say global warming, mainly due to the burning of fossil fuels, is exacerbating extreme weather patterns around the globe.
