China detects no unusual pathogens in outbreak

VnExpressVnExpress24/11/2023

China says no unusual or new pathogens have been detected in a respiratory illness outbreak among children in the country's north.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on November 23 that China reported that it had not detected any unusual or new pathogens or unusual clinical manifestations, including in Beijing and Liaoning, but only a general increase in respiratory diseases from many known causes.

Beijing responded after the WHO asked China to provide details on rising respiratory illness cases and pneumonia clusters among children. The WHO previously said China had seen a rise in cases of “influenza-like respiratory illness” since mid-October, similar to the Covid-19 pandemic three years ago.

By regulation, China is required to respond to the WHO within 24 hours. Data shows a rise in respiratory illness linked to the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, along with the spread of a known pathogen called mycoplasma pneumoniae, a bacterial infection that affects young children.

"China added that the increase in respiratory cases has not resulted in the number of patients exceeding hospital capacity. WHO is closely monitoring the situation and is in contact with Chinese authorities," the WHO said.

WHO recommends that people in China follow preventive measures to reduce the risk of respiratory illness, such as getting vaccinated, keeping distance from sick people, staying home when sick, getting tested and seeking medical care when needed, wearing appropriate masks, and washing hands frequently.

"WHO does not recommend any specific measures for travellers to China," the organization added.

Beijing is experiencing a deep cold spell, with temperatures forecast to drop below zero on November 24. "The city has entered the peak season for respiratory infections," said Wang Quanyi, deputy director of the Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Chinese authorities have recommended strengthening surveillance in health facilities and communities, as well as strengthening health system capacity. Many countries are seeing similar increases in respiratory illnesses after easing Covid-19 containment measures.
