China: Coal mine explosion kills dozens.

(HTV) - On May 23, China Central Television (CCTV) reported that at least 90 people were killed in a gas explosion at a coal mine in Shanxi province, northern China. Rescue efforts are still underway.

According to CCTV, the explosion occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. (local time) on May 22nd at the Liu-shen-yu coal mine in Qinyuan County, where 247 workers were working underground at the time.

Earlier, Xinhua reported that only eight people had died and more than 200 had been brought to the surface this morning. The reason for the sharp increase in the death toll to 90 remains unexplained.

Chinese media reported that so far 156 people have been rescued, with 123 currently receiving hospital treatment and 33 having been discharged after medical care.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
