On the occasion of attending the 19th General Assembly of the Organization of Asia- Pacific News Agencies (OANA) and related events in Saint Petersburg (Russian Federation), Director General of Vietnam News Agency (VNA) Vu Viet Trang gave an interview before the event about OANA's activities as well as VNA's active participation in this organization.
- OANA is the largest regional press forum with 2/3 of the global information. How do you evaluate the activities of this multilateral press organization?
General Director Vu Viet Trang : First of all, I would like to affirm that OANA's cooperation in the field of journalism has brought many practical benefits to member news agencies since its establishment in 1961.
OANA's mission is to facilitate the direct and free dissemination and exchange of information among news agencies in the Asia- Pacific region.
For over 6 decades, as a forum for prestigious news agencies, the cooperation contents within the framework of OANA are very practical, professional and close to the actual situation of regional and world press.
The activities that OANA has carried out over the years have reflected the mainstream of mainstream journalistic life in the region.
OANA's core activity is for news agencies to share their press products on the organization's main portal at oananews.org. This is a useful source of information for members to exploit and have the right to share on each member's media channels.
In recent years, OANA's website has been continuously upgraded to be able to publish multimedia press products as well as innovative and creative press products.
In the context of fake news and false news being problems in social life, having reliable and accurate sources of information from national news agencies is very useful for reference, timely response and rebuttal, contributing to ensuring national interests, for a peaceful and stable environment in the region and the world.
In addition to information activities, OANA also launched many initiatives to organize activities to honor innovative solutions of member news agencies; honor reporters and editors with excellent press products, creating breakthrough developments for their organizations through awards such as the OANA Award for Excellence in News Quality; and the Award for Outstanding Photo and Article.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, OANA demonstrated the responsibility of journalists to society by organizing an online photo exhibition of impressive images of each country during the pandemic and a writing contest about the experiences of reporters working during the pandemic.
The emotional images and stories have encouraged the dedication and selflessness of journalists who are always ready to be present at hot spots to truthfully reflect life and society.
Regional photo exhibitions and displays are also an opportunity for news agencies to exchange photography skills and the professional results of photojournalists in the region.
Faced with the strong development trend of new media, especially the increasingly popular application of modern technology and artificial intelligence technology in journalism, OANA has organized online training courses, popularized modern journalism skills and widely disseminated them on the common information portal for sharing and learning.
After 64 years of operation, OANA continues to affirm itself as a professional forum, representing the official voice of regional journalism in the world media flow.
- VNA joined OANA in 1969. Can you tell us more about VNA's participation in this organization?
Director General Vu Viet Trang : As the country's main foreign information agency, VNA always attaches importance to international integration in the field of information as well as taking advantage of cooperative relations with other countries to convey official information about Vietnam, spreading Vietnam's viewpoints and stances on international issues in the past struggle for national independence; in building and developing the country and firmly entering the new era today.
During the war years, with the help of technical equipment and broadcasting locations from news agencies such as TASS (Russian Federation), Prensa Latina (Cuba) and a number of other socialist news agencies, VNA fulfilled its noble media mission, transmitting the righteous, peace-loving voice of the Vietnamese people to the world.
Joining OANA very early has effectively contributed to VNA's performance of its foreign information mission. As the country's main foreign press agency, the dissemination of news information on the media channels of more than 40 OANA member agencies has helped countries know about a dynamic, developing, responsible and integrated Vietnam, contributing to the successful implementation of the foreign policy of our Party and State.
In recent years, with the attention of the Party and State, promoting the tradition of a heroic news agency, VNA has not only actively participated but also proactively proposed many initiatives within the framework of OANA cooperation, creating a new image of effective cooperation in the digital age.
This includes the active role of Vietnam's national news agency in participating in professional projects initiated by OANA such as Awards honoring outstanding contributions to regional journalism; exhibitions and photo displays; initiatives on technological innovation in the field of communications...
Initiatives and efforts in promoting cooperation with news agencies in the Asia-Pacific region are one of the pillars in implementing Conclusion 57 of the Politburo on continuing to improve the quality and effectiveness of foreign information work in the new situation and concretizing Resolution 59 of the Politburo on international integration in the new situation.
With its proactiveness and responsibility in OANA activities, VNA has been elected as a member of the OANA Executive Board for four consecutive terms from 2013 to present, and has been appointed as a member of the Task Force for the current term 2022-2025 to propose ideas to strengthen cohesion and improve the operational efficiency of the multilateral press cooperation organization OANA.
- Madam, what will the 19th OANA General Assembly and related events focus on and what is their significance in the current trend of press development?
General Director Vu Viet Trang : As an event held every three years, the 19th OANA General Assembly this year is held at a time when journalism activities are undergoing strong changes due to the development of modern journalism technologies.
With the theme “News agencies and challenges in the modern world”, delegates will discuss issues that the press needs to address to maintain public trust in the information provided by news agencies as well as discuss solutions to apply technology in a controlled manner in current press activities.
Within the framework of the conference, there will also be a photo exhibition by reporters from OANA news agencies, reflecting the unique traditional cultures of each country and the vibrant press activities in the region.
Attending the conference, VNA will present a presentation on new experiences in the operations of newsrooms and VNA's grasp of modern journalism trends.
At the plenary session of the General Assembly, VNA will be honored to receive two First Prizes in the categories of Outstanding Article and Photo Reportage. These awards recognize the professionalism and dedication of VNA reporters and demonstrate VNA's responsible, active and proactive participation in the regional and international press environment.
