Sleeping positions for healthy and beautiful skin

India Lying on your back has a positive effect on skin health, helping to reduce pressure, prevent wrinkles, and reduce water retention.

To maintain radiant skin, many people invest a lot of money in serums, creams, spa treatments or elaborate skin care routines. However, experts say another important aspect that is often overlooked is sleep and sleeping position. These two factors have a clear impact on skin health, said Dr. Aanchal Panth of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Sleep on your side

Sleeping on your left or right side is a popular choice for many people, but it does have some effects on the skin. According to Dr Gitika Sanodia Biyani, dermatologist and cosmetic specialist at Dr LH Hiranandani Hospital, pressing your cheek against the pillow can cause facial wrinkles to form while you sleep, which over time develop into permanent wrinkles. The pressure of sleeping on your side also breaks down collagen, a protein that keeps the skin firm and elastic, leading to premature aging.

To remedy this, Dr. Biyani recommends investing in silk or satin pillowcases to create less friction and reduce the risk of waking up with wrinkles.

Lying on your stomach

Sleeping on your stomach is considered the worst position for skin health. When your face is buried in the pillow, the friction can lead to more severe wrinkles than sleeping on your side, according to Dr. Monica Bambroo, head of dermatology and cosmetic surgery at Artemis Hospital. In addition, this position contributes to increased eye bags due to fluid accumulation.

Lie on your back

Sleeping on your back is considered by many dermatologists to be the ideal sleeping position for skin health. Dr. Sreelekha Challagundla says that when you sleep on your back, there is minimal contact between your skin and your pillowcase, which reduces the risk of developing lines and wrinkles, which can form over time due to friction and pressure on the skin. Sleeping on your back also prevents dirt from accumulating on your face, which helps your skin look brighter.

Dr. Bambroo explains that this pose also promotes blood circulation, allowing nutrients and oxygen to reach the skin effectively, thereby supporting collagen production.

Dermatologists suggest elevating your upper body with a second pillow to help brighten your skin. This position can help prevent water retention in the face, reducing puffiness in the morning. It also promotes better lymphatic drainage, which gives your skin a fresh look, explains Dr. Biyani.
