The Wind Abstinence Custom is recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage

(PLVN) - On May 1, Binh Lieu district held a ceremony to announce and receive the Decision to include "Wind Abstinence Custom of Dao people in Dong Van commune, Binh Lieu district, Quang Ninh province" in the List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage and opened the Wind Abstinence Festival 2025.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Secretary of the District Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Binh Lieu District Pham Duc Thang shared: Preserving and promoting traditional cultural values ​​is the foundation for sustainable development, the path for Binh Lieu to build its own identity, and enhance the local image in the integration flow.

Mr. Pham Duc Thang hopes to continue to receive companionship, support, and professional advice from central agencies, researchers, and heritage conservation organizations, so that the "Wind-avoiding custom" heritage of the Dao people in Dong Van commune will be increasingly spread, not only within the locality but also further, regionally and internationally.

At the ceremony, representatives of the Party Committee, government and people of all ethnic groups in Binh Lieu district received Decision No. 3975/QD-BVHTTDL dated December 10, 2024, of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on the announcement of the List of national intangible cultural heritage "Wind Abstinence Custom" into the national intangible cultural heritage treasure.

The recognition of this heritage value by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is not only a great honor for the Dao people of Binh Lieu, but also an affirmation of the everlasting cultural value in the Vietnamese national culture. Despite many changes over time, the “Wind Abstinence Custom” is still preserved intact by the community through artisans, shamans, and sorcerers – those who connect tradition with the present.

“Wind Abstinence” is a unique ritual imbued with the spiritual elements of the Dao community in Dong Van commune, a border commune in the highlands of Binh Lieu. Not only is it a traditional ritual, this custom also deeply reflects the harmony between humans and nature, between the real world and the spiritual world, and is a symbol of community cohesion, consensus, love and the desire to protect peace.

Within the framework of the Wind Abstinence Festival 2025, many unique cultural and sports activities will take place, including: Art festivals between villages and hamlets; Competitions in traditional sports such as spinning tops, pushing sticks, throwing shuttlecocks, etc.

In addition, there is also a spinning top exchange between Dong Van commune, Hoanh Mo (Vietnam) and Dong Trung town (China); Display and introduction of OCOP products, handicraft products; Experience community tourism, local cuisine...

This event contributes to preserving and promoting traditional cultural values, while promoting the image of Quang Ninh as an attractive and safe destination in the northeastern border region of the country.

The 2025 Wind Abstinence Festival will take place until May 4.
