EUR/USD world exchange rate today May 14, 2025
The EUR/USD pair rose sharply to near 1.1174, as the US dollar (USD) came under pressure following a lower-than-expected inflation report from the US.
According to recently released data, the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) in April increased by only 2.3% compared to the same period last year, lower than the forecast and the 2.4% in March. Core inflation (excluding food and energy) increased by 2.8%, in line with expectations. Compared to the previous month, both the overall CPI and core CPI increased by 0.2%, lower than the forecast of 0.3%.
The slowdown in inflation has raised expectations that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) may cut interest rates in the near future, thereby putting downward pressure on the USD.
At the time of reporting, the US Dollar Index (DXY), which reflects the strength of the USD against a basket of six major currencies, fell to near 101.40. Previously, the USD had somewhat adjusted down after the news that the US and China reached an agreement to temporarily reduce tariffs for 90 days, avoiding an escalation of trade tensions.
However, the impact of the low inflation data is not expected to significantly change Fed policy expectations, as policymakers remain concerned about inflation expectations amid trade uncertainty. Although the two countries have agreed to temporarily reduce tariffs, current tariffs remain high and could continue to put pressure on prices.
Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee said Monday that the impact of the US-China trade war may be less severe than the Fed had feared. But he warned that concerns about rising prices and slowing growth persist, as tariffs are still three to five times higher than they were before, and this will continue to slow the economy and push up the cost of living.
