The US dollar recovered after its recent weakness against other currencies appeared to have run out of steam for the time being, while the euro weakened slightly after the European Central Bank (ECB) cut interest rates for the seventh time in a year.

The Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the USD against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), stopped at 99.53 - down 0.05 points compared to April 17, 2025.

The greenback has largely steadied this week and held in a narrow range against the common European currency, following sharp declines last week on concerns about the economic impact of tariffs and investors shifting investments abroad.

"We've had a pretty impressive rally in most of the G10 currencies and so I think we're in a bit of a pause. Our medium-term view remains negative for the US dollar, so we just see this as a consolidation phase," said Eric Theoret, FX strategist at Scotiabank.

Traders are closely watching discussions between the United States and its trading partners for signs of a deal that could clarify the Trump administration's goals.

The ECB has cut interest rates to their lowest level since late 2022, in a bid to support the struggling eurozone economy that will be hit hard by US tariffs.

“It was dovish in tone. The focus has shifted to looking at downside risks to the growth outlook, rather than upside risks to inflation,” said Kirstine Kundby-Nielsen, FX analyst at Danske Bank.

US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said on Wednesday the Fed would wait for more data on the direction of the economy before changing interest rates, but warned that Trump's tariff policies risked pushing inflation and employment further away from the central bank's goals.

Data on Thursday showed the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell last week, suggesting labor market conditions remained solid in April.

The euro was last down 0.35% on the day at $1.1358, holding below a three-year high of $1.1473 hit on Friday. Against the Japanese yen, the dollar strengthened 0.3% to 142.24. It earlier hit 141.60, its lowest since September 18.

Trading volumes are expected to drop ahead of Good Friday, when most US markets will be closed although the forex market will remain open.

Against the Swiss franc, the dollar strengthened 0.55% to 0.817.

Meanwhile, the kiwi rose 0.51% to $0.5964 after data showed New Zealand consumer prices rose faster than expected in the first quarter.

The Australian dollar strengthened 0.22% to $0.6383 as data showed Australian employment rebounded in March.

The pound was last up 0.07% at $1.3249.
