Ukraine is likely to soon create rudimentary nuclear weapons, the time to launch the "hot stuff" will not be far away

A report by experts from the Center for Military Studies, Conversion and Disarmament of Ukraine (CACDS) said that Kiev could quickly manufacture rudimentary nuclear weapons.

On November 13, the British newspaper The Times quoted the above report as affirming that: "Creating a simple atomic bomb, as the US did under the Manhattan Project, would not be a difficult task at present."

It has been suggested that, due to the lack of uranium enrichment capabilities, Ukraine could use reactor plutonium extracted from spent nuclear fuel to create nuclear weapons using technology similar to that used by the US for the "Fat Man" bomb dropped on Nagasaki in 1945.

According to estimates, the plutonium stockpile in Ukraine is about 7 tons, an amount that the authors of the report say is enough to create hundreds of tactical warheads with a yield of several kilotons of TNT.

Using a plutonium reactor in a nuclear weapon would require complex technologies, but the report assesses that Ukraine has access to them.

According to The Times , the CACDS document was transferred to the Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine and was also presented to the management of enterprises of the country's military-industrial complex, which mentioned the possibility of Kiev withdrawing from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

According to Alexei Izhak, one of the authors of the report, Ukraine is believed to be able to use its own nuclear weapons to attack Russian “air bases, military personnel concentrations, industrial or logistical facilities.”

Furthermore, the power of such charges “would be unpredictable, because they would use different isotopes of plutonium.”

Western experts believe it will take Ukraine at least five years to create its own nuclear weapons, but CIACR director Valentin Badrak said it could happen faster, The Times reported.

According to him, Ukraine will be able to launch the long-range ballistic missile it is developing with a range of 1,000 km in just six months. He also believes that Britain could be expected to support Ukraine in developing nuclear weapons if Washington significantly reduces its support for Kiev.

The use of nuclear weapons in the conflict in Ukraine could cause a total catastrophe not only for this country and Russia, but for all of humanity and the planet. Neither Ukraine nor the UK has responded to the information in the article.

Ukraine is currently stepping up spending on the production of weapons and military equipment, accordingly, in 2025, Kiev will pour more than 55 billion hryvnia (more than 1.3 billion USD) into this area, about 3.5 billion hryvnia more than in 2024.

The money will be used to develop production, apply new technologies and improve the capacity of defense enterprises.

In recent times, Ukraine's defense industry has grown in size, contributing more to the economy . Last month, President Volodymyr Zelensky affirmed that Ukraine can produce 4 million unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) per year and is increasing military production, including missiles and transport vehicles.

Ukraine is also close to establishing three new joint ventures with European arms manufacturers, while it has already established five joint ventures with Western arms manufacturers, including German and Lithuanian companies. Several arms manufacturers have opened offices in Ukraine.

German arms giant Rheinmetall has opened its first defense plant in Ukraine dedicated to maintaining combat vehicles, with plans to start producing Lynx infantry fighting vehicles later this year.

Meanwhile, BAE Systems, Babcock (UK), KNDS (France-Germany) and MyDefence, a company specializing in anti-UAV technology (Denmark), have cooperated with Ukrainian manufacturers and set up local offices.
