Applying modern technology, creating new space for performing arts

Performing arts units are aiming to retain the core values of traditional art but add more modern entertainment elements, while creating products for cultural tourism.

The application of modern technology to performing arts is an inevitable development of the cultural industry, especially in the context of the public increasingly demanding rich and novel experiences.

That is the opinion of People's Artist Tong Toan Thang, Director of the Vietnam Circus Federation, at an event to launch the Star Theater in Hanoi on May 20.

According to People's Artist Tong Toan Thang, technologies such as AR/VR, hologram, or 3D mapping, when properly applied, will not only beautify the performance, but also create a new dimension for the audience's emotions and imagination.

According to Mr. Thang, the theater has invested in a multi-layered projection stage system, a synchronized sound and lighting system, and is capable of fully exploiting these new technologies. That opens up many opportunities for performing arts and projection, including subjects such as circus, to be renewed in both form and storytelling.

“Technology does not replace emotions, but it will help amplify emotions and spread them more strongly, and that is what any artist wants,” said Mr. Thang.

For circus artists, integrating technology is more difficult than usual. If performing traditionally, artists only show off their techniques on stage. Applying technology requires twice the time, because it must interact with sound and light precisely down to each beat.

“That’s why in the world, Cirque du Soleil takes 2 years to build a show. Artists have to focus and improve more when performing with music , lights, and 3D mapping,” Mr. Thang raised the issue.

Ten years ago, the Vietnam Circus Federation created the surreal show “IONAH” at the Star Galaxy Theater. Now, with modern performance technology at the Star Theater, Mr. Thang will collaborate to stage a performance that combines circus, dance and visual projection, exploiting the depth of space and the depth of emotion. It could be a wordless performance, with the body as the main language and technology as the “dynamic backdrop” to convey the story.

Speaking with reporters from VietnamPlus Electronic Newspaper, Meritorious Artist Kieu Minh Hieu, in charge of the Vietnam Drama Theater, also emphasized the role of applying technology in performing arts to meet the needs of today's audiences.

“State-run theaters have not invested heavily in projection technology. Most of us only have stages with basic artistic designs. The fact that private theaters are investing in modern performance technology is a good sign for the cultural industry,” said Mr. Kieu Minh Hieu.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Nguyet Anh, Director of Ngoi Sao Theater, said that the unit has signed cooperation agreements with a number of theaters under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to bring impressive art programs to the audience. These are new versions, retaining the core values and spirit of the play, but containing updated elements, with higher entertainment value./.
