Lychees exported to Japan, one of the most demanding markets in the world , have been consumed favorably since the beginning of the season. Thanh Ha lychees (Hai Duong) and Luc Ngan lychees (Bac Giang) are currently "selected goods" purchased by businesses for export.

According to Ms. Nguyen Khanh Ly, Director of Senkyu Company (headquartered in Tokyo, Japan), after the first batch of lychees arrived in Japan on May 28, the company continued to purchase lychees from Hai Duong and Bac Giang to bring to more than 1,000 stores and supermarkets in Japan.
Currently, the wholesale price of lychee for partners is about 1,500 yen/kg (about more than 250,000 VND/kg), the retail price is about 1,800 yen/kg (about 310,000 VND/kg).
According to Ms. Nguyen Khanh Ly, Vietnamese lychees are competing with Taiwanese and Mexican lychees in the Japanese market . Among them, Vietnamese lychees are considered more delicious than Taiwanese lychees by Japanese consumers .
"We expect to import 200 tons of lychee this year. Vietnamese lychee is becoming a luxurious and special gift in the eyes of the Japanese," said Ms. Ly.
Representative of a company that has been supplying fresh lychees to Japan for many years, Mr. Nguyen Phi Thoan, CEO of JV Solutions Company, said that the current lychee output is not enough to supply customers who have placed orders. This year's lychees are more delicious and look better than previous years, so consumption is favorable.
Monitor each batch of lychee exported to Japan
According to Mr. Ta Duc Minh, Vietnam Trade Counselor in Japan, after many years of trade promotion and advertising in many festivals and events, Vietnamese lychees have gradually won over the Japanese people. In 2023, the Vietnam Trade Office in Japan organized a delegation of Japanese businesses and entrepreneurs to visit lychee growing areas in Luc Ngan (Bac Giang) and Thanh Ha ( Hai Duong ).
"Before the harvest, many businesses in Japan contacted the trade office to plan imports. It is forecasted that lychee export output will increase dramatically this year," said Mr. Minh.
Sharing with Thanh Nien, Mr. Nguyen Quang Hieu, Deputy Director of the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment), said that to enter Japan, lychee batches must undergo fumigation technology using Methyl Bromide at 3 facilities recognized by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection.
This is a strict technology that helps eliminate pests and chemical residues, ensuring Japanese food safety regulations.
Also according to Mr. Tran Quang Hieu, on June 5, MAFF experts will be in Vietnam to inspect the lychee raw material areas of Luc Ngan and Thanh Ha and evaluate the control process of each export shipment.
"This year, MAFF experts only came to inspect the raw material area and process once and did not stay to monitor the whole season like previous years. This work was authorized by MAFF to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection," said Mr. Hieu./.
