Change your information consumption habits.

In the context of technology, the rapid development of audiovisual products such as social media, short videos , podcasts, and entertainment games is gradually occupying people's time. This poses a significant challenge to the development of reading culture.

Undeniably, people are becoming increasingly accustomed to receiving information quickly and in a highly entertaining way. Short videos on TikTok, YouTube, and concise news articles on social media have shaped a trend of "skimming and quick viewing."

Significantly, with today's youth growing up surrounded by smartphones and social media, traditional reading, with its length and depth, has become more inaccessible. Furthermore, impatience in consuming lengthy content reduces the quality and effectiveness of reading. Reading culture, if understood only in its traditional sense, risks fading away in the digital age.

In reality, the traditional approach to knowledge acquisition through reading is changing, facing competition from social media and audiovisual media. The rapid development of the Internet has led to books seemingly being "forgotten." Instead of seeking out books, many people search for information and read through social media platforms or films. It's become commonplace to see people of all ages glued to their phones, reading news, browsing the web, or using social media. Simultaneously, many people are also searching for sensational and trending content... this is affecting readers' access to information and distorting their perceptions.

Many people worry that the development of online entertainment on social media is "occupying" too much of people's time, leading to a reluctance to read books and seek knowledge from official sources. So how can we promote a reading culture through digital technology?

Opportunities from technology

From a holistic perspective, the digital age not only presents barriers but also opens opportunities for reading culture to spread and adapt in new, more modern ways. Technology is opening up promising avenues for the development of reading culture. The emergence of e-books, audiobooks, online book sharing and reading platforms, and digital libraries makes accessing knowledge easier and more flexible.

Moreover, social media is becoming an effective tool for spreading a love of books. Book-loving communities, book review blogs, and YouTube channels sharing book content are growing and attracting a large number of young people. "Telling stories from books" through images, sounds, or short videos is a creative way to bring books closer to the modern audience.

Reading culture in the digital age doesn't necessarily have to be tied to traditional paper books. Reading can take the form of text, audio, or images; it can be reading stories, blogs, or in-depth articles… The important thing is to maintain the spirit of reading, which is the ability to absorb, reflect, and develop critical thinking.

The 4.0 era also allows for the personalization of the reading experience. Each person can choose the form, content, and time that suits them best. This is a key factor in maintaining and developing reading habits in modern society. Significantly, modern life leaves people with less and less time for reading; therefore, through digital technology, the increasing availability of books allows us to access knowledge more quickly and easily.

The crucial question is how to empower each young person to become an "ambassador" of reading culture? It must also be recognized that developing a reading culture in the current context is an important but challenging task, requiring comprehensive solutions that impact the public, especially young people.

To achieve this, it is essential to focus on educating readers about the role of the family in shaping a reading culture. Schools should also organize book festivals to enhance the importance of reading culture. Furthermore, library systems must digitize books to make them more accessible to everyone. For a reading culture to develop sustainably, reading practices must be tailored to specific target groups. Moreover, everyone should cultivate a daily reading habit, especially in today's digital age.

Perhaps, the concept of reading culture needs to change to suit the digital age. Technology must be seen as the key to unlocking a new phase of development for reading culture. Audiobooks and e-books are increasingly developing, and these forms of reading also have high interactive capabilities. Readers not only access knowledge in a one-way manner through books but can also interact with authors and other readers through the internet. Thus, the benefits that technology brings to readers cannot be denied.

Knowing how to adapt, innovate, and leverage technology as a supporting tool will contribute to the development of reading culture. Developing a reading culture in the 4.0 era is not only the responsibility of individual readers, but also the mission of publishers, educators, cultural managers, and the entire community. After all, a society that knows how to read and reads deeply is always the foundation for sustainable development.
