Due to the demands of the times and the basic features of reality, which are the fierce, arduous, sacrificial and glorious struggles of the nation, the literature of anti-Americanism and national salvation mainly has an epic tendency and romantic inspiration, reflecting the vital issues of the country, the nation and the times. Writers consciously attach themselves to the nation, the country and the people, using their pens to serve the resistance and encourage fighting. The Fatherland and the revolution are the great inspiration and consistent theme of literature.

Anti-American, national salvation literature created beautiful artistic images of the country and the people. Anti-American literature had a rich and quite comprehensive development in terms of genres. Poetry brought a new, strong lyrical voice to the masses. Poetry forms also had positive changes in a modern and diverse direction. Short stories, novellas, novels and memoirs also developed richly and diversely in terms of artistic style. Literary scripts, theories, research and literary criticism developed with the role of affirming the Party's literary and artistic line, orienting the creation and enjoyment of literature. A large number of writers were gathered with many talents and diverse styles, forming and developing the writer-soldier model. Many writers and poets lived, fought, composed and fell on the battlefield; many works were written on the difficult and dangerous Truong Son paths, in the trenches, under the fierce bombs and bullets of the enemy.
The Southern revolutionary memoirs promptly reflected the struggle of the heroic Southern army and people with typical works: “Children in the family”, “Mother holding a gun” (Nguyen Thi), “Xa Nu forest”, “On the homeland of the heroes of Dien Ngoc” (Nguyen Trung Thanh), “Hon dat”, “Giac mo ong lao ong vuon chim”, “Buc thu Ca Mau” (Anh Duc), “Chiec ivory comb” (Nguyen Quang Sang), “Gia dinh ma Bay”, “Man va toi” (Phan Tu), “Song nhu anh” (Tran Dinh Van)… In the North, prose also developed with outstanding achievements: “ Hanoi , we are good at fighting the Americans” (Nguyen Tuan), “Vung troi” (Huu Mai), “Chien si”, “Going to the island” (Nguyen Khai), “Different skies”, “Dau chan nguoi han” (Nguyen Minh Chau), “Bao bien” (Chu Van), short stories by Nguyen Thanh Long, Nguyen Kien, Vu Thi Thuong…
Anti-American poetry achieved outstanding achievements, focusing on expressing the great march of the entire nation, discovering the beauty of the soul and strength of the Vietnamese people, the contemporary significance of the resistance war against the US to save the country. Many poetry collections have unique values: "Going to battle", "Blood and flowers" (To Huu), "Ordinary flowers", "Storm leopard" (Che Lan Vien), "Two waves", "I have rich eyes" (Xuan Dieu), "Moon hanging on the gun barrel" (Chinh Huu), "Moon halo" (Pham Tien Duat), "Aspirational road surface" (Nguyen Khoa Diem), "August tomorrow", "Homeland" (Giang Nam), "Chow rai bird song" (Thu Bon), "Coconut flowers" (Le Anh Xuan), "Flowers along the trenches" (Xuan Quynh)...
In addition to memoirs and poetry, anti-American drama also had remarkable achievements, with famous works: "Vietnam Homeland" (Xuan Trinh), "My Captain" (Dao Hong Cam), "Eyes" (Nguyen Vu). Many valuable works of theory, criticism, and literary research were born during this period, especially works by Dang Thai Mai, Vu Ngoc Phan, Hoai Thanh, Xuan Dieu, Che Lan Vien... In the cities of the temporarily occupied southern regions, there was a group of patriotic and revolutionary literature with works expressing deep patriotism and national spirit such as "Blood Pen" (Vu Hanh), "Missing Twelve" (Vu Bang), "Scent of Ca Mau Forest" (Son Nam), "Dear Mother", "Heart" (Tran Quang Long)...
Looking back over 50 years, we are even more appreciative and proud of the journey of literature against the US, saving the country - a literature full of fighting spirit and humanity. Literature against the US, saving the country has made a worthy contribution to the cause of national liberation and unification. With the achievements in reflecting the reality of the resistance war against the US, our country's literature and art "deserves to stand in the vanguard of anti-imperialist literature and art in today's era" as our Party has recognized. We need to strengthen the education of today's young generation to love, appreciate and be proud of the historical and cultural traditions, proud of the glorious victory of our nation in the resistance war against the US, saving the country and the literature of the most painful and heroic period in the development of Vietnamese literature.
