The season of sweet, ripe fruits.

In the red basalt soil of Dak Lak, the people count the year by two seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. When the land is refreshed by the first rains of the season, the sweet fruits of this region begin to ripen in abundance.

Visiting Dak Lak these days, tourists from near and far are even more delighted to easily encounter the colorful and flavorful scenery created by the ripening fruit season that is entering its harvest season.

Growing up in Dak Lak, I myself was amazed by the abundance of produce from my homeland. To list them clearly, early summer is the peak season for ripe fruits. From the season of ripe mangoes and clusters of bright red lychees, to the season of juicy rambutan, oranges, and longan, followed by the avocado season, and the durian season with its distinctive, pungent aroma that delights people and entices tourists from near and far… Dak Lak, known as the capital of coffee, is now also the capital of fruit!

Farmers in Ea Kar district are harvesting lychees.

Previously, this area was mainly used for growing long-term industrial crops such as coffee, rubber, and pepper. Fruit trees were only grown in home gardens or intercropped in fields, primarily to meet the needs of individual families. People in Dak Lak who wanted delicious fruit had to have it transported from the Mekong Delta or from northern provinces.

The "generosity" of nature in terms of soil and climate has, over time, allowed many fruit trees to take root and thrive, creating the fertile land with diverse crops we see today. Fruits from almost all regions can be found on this red basalt soil. Currently, the area of fruit trees in Dak Lak is approximately 68,000 hectares and is constantly increasing. In particular, this region is home to many key and specialty fruit crops such as durian, avocado, and lychee. Fruit production is gradually becoming a strong industry for the locality.

Thanks to advancements in science and technology, some types of fruit in Dak Lak are available on the market almost year-round, both during peak and off-season. However, the most distinctive time is when the fruit is in its peak season, starting around the end of April and beginning of May, with a wide variety of types.

Traveling along National Highway 26, Krông Pắc district has become famous for its durian, a fruit that has helped many farmers become millionaires. Initially, farmers only planted durian intercropped in their coffee gardens, mainly supplying traders or selling at markets within the province. Over time, this fruit tree adapted well to the soil and climate, becoming a "king," and was invested in specialized cultivation areas. Combined with new farming techniques, this has resulted in superior yields and quality. Durian has now reached the international market, bringing significant income to farmers.

During the fruit ripening season, this rural area becomes bustling, with busy roads and container trucks traveling day and night carrying export shipments. People's hearts are filled with joy as they anticipate a bountiful harvest after days of diligent labor. Furthermore, recognizing the potential for development from this crop, the local government has promoted and organized the Krông Pắc Durian Festival with the aspiration of making Krông Pắc district the true durian capital of the country. The festival attracts a large number of domestic and international tourists who come to learn about, experience, immerse themselves in nature, and enjoy the sweetness and aroma of ripe fruit right in the orchards.

While avocados and durians were once the quintessential fruits of Dak Lak, the region is now also known for other fruits that bring economic value to growers and contribute to the region's brand, such as Ea Kar lychees, Ea Sup mangoes, and Buon Don oranges.

In Dak Lak, the fruit ripening season is not simply a harvest season that brings income to farmers, but also an opportunity for locals and tourists to come, enjoy the pristine flavors and vibrant natural beauty of this fertile plateau, and experience the taste of home through its specialties and a wide variety of fresh, delicious fruits. Therefore, the fruit ripening season in Dak Lak is also a season of reunion. Friends from near and far also learn more about Dak Lak.

As the season approaches, children studying far away and relatives living far away all take advantage of their summer break to visit family and choose the right season to enjoy the delicious flavors and specialties of Dak Lak province. Many relatives and tourists "wait" for the right season to travel to Dak Lak, to the orchards or rural markets, to personally select, inhale the aroma, and enjoy the fruits on the spot. This is the joy of homegrown specialties, especially during peak season.
