Artists mourn the passing of Professor Hoang Chuong

The news that Professor Hoang Chuong passed away at 2:25 p.m. on June 5 in Hanoi at the age of 94 has caused artists and writers across the country to mourn. His funeral will be held at Funeral Home No. 5 Le Thanh Tong, Hanoi on June 11, followed by burial at Thien Duc Memorial Park Cemetery, Phu Tho.

Ms. Pham Ngoc Anh - Director of Stage Publishing House - said that Professor Hoang Chuong had pneumonia so his family took him to the Central Geriatric Hospital for treatment. However, due to old age and poor health, he passed away after a period of fighting the disease. "He was my boss, a respected teacher and I am always grateful for his contributions, guidance and instruction in my career of research, journalism and publishing" - Ms. Pham Ngoc Anh shared.

Professor Hoang Chuong, real name Truong Hoang Chuong, was born in 1931 in Binh Dinh. He is the Director of the Institute for Research, Preservation and Promotion of National Culture.

He used to hold the positions of Deputy Director of Vietnam Tuong Theater, Director of Vietnam Theatre Research Institute, Permanent Vice President of the Central Committee of Vietnam - Romania Friendship Association, and Editor-in-Chief of Van Hien Magazine.

In 2005, he was awarded the First Class Labor Medal by the State. In 2010, he was honored as one of the 10 most outstanding scientists at the National Emulation Congress - Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations.

In 2021, he was honored bythe President with the title of Hero of Labor in the renovation period and honored by Hanoi as an Outstanding Citizen of the Capital.

Professor Hoang Chuong is always a shining example for generations of artists across the country.

Professor Hoang Chuong left behind more than 20 research works on national culture, causing resonance at home and abroad. People's Artist Tran Minh Ngoc was moved to say: "Professor Hoang Chuong not only chaired many scientific seminars and training programs in the country, he also taught traditional Vietnamese arts at many universities in the US, UK, France, Germany, Korea, Japan... Typical works include: Traditional theater issues, Bài chòi and folk songs of Lien khu 5, Northern Tuong art, Tuong and national martial arts... All are valuable research works".

Professor Hoang Chuong is also an advisor to the Council for the construction of the heritage dossier of the art of Bài Chòi. He once wrote the book Preserving and promoting the value of Bài Chòi - a valuable book to serve the preparation of the dossier to submit to UNESCO for recognition of Bài Chòi as a heritage of humanity. Not long ago, Professor Hoang Chuong was presented with a statue of himself carved from 300 million-year-old Anthracite.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Dr. Vu Van Dong - former Director of Geology - Mining Company expressed: "With the great contributions of Professor Hoang Chuong, our Party and State have recognized and highly appreciated by awarding the Professor the title of Hero of Labor in the Renewal Period in 2020, and Outstanding Citizen of the Capital in 2021.

Professor Hoang Chuong is truly one of the monuments and one of the "banyan trees" of Vietnamese national culture. Respecting the Professor, Mining Geology Joint Stock Company decided to carve a statue of the Professor from Cam Pha Anthracite Coal, an extremely rare type of coal, formed over 300 million years ago, forged from the spiritual energy of heaven and earth deep in the ground, just as Professor Hoang Chuong was also forged from the sacredness of his birthplace, Binh Dinh, cherished from cultural values, accumulated through many ups and downs of history. From small pieces, a person, a great personality, a great researcher of Vietnam was formed...".

Professor Hoang Chuong is always loved by generations of talented artists and students.

With the concept that "A nation without culture will not exist", Professor Hoang Chuong devoted his life to researching and protecting traditional art heritages such as tuong, cheo, cai luong, folk opera, bai choi, ca Hue, vi dam, Cham art...

In more than 60 years of tireless work, his legacy is more than 20 research projects. In addition, Professor Hoang Chuong is also the chair and editor of many ministerial-level projects on national culture, organizing seminars that have received much resonance at home and abroad such as: Tuong with foreign themes, Literature and art with Tay Son themes...

People's Artist Le Thi commented: "Professor Hoang Chuong was once an advisor to the Council for building the heritage dossier of the art of Bài Chòi. He wrote the book Preserving and promoting the value of Bài Chòi - a valuable book to serve the preparation of a dossier to submit to UNESCO for recognition of Bài Chòi as a heritage of humanity. In December 2017, at the meeting held at the Jeju International Convention Center, Korea, UNESCO unanimously agreed to register the dossier "The Art of Bài Chòi in Central Vietnam" as a representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity".
