Shaqueel, 19, spent two years at Man City's academy before returning to Feyenoord in 2017. He signed a professional contract in 2022 and was first registered to play against NEC Nijmegen last weekend. In the away match at Celtic on the morning of November 28, the young striker was given the opportunity to debut for the first team in the 81st minute.
“It was a coach’s decision, not a father’s. The team needed goals and Shaqueel is the type of player who can score from many angles,” said Feyenoord coach Van Persie.
The moment was special for both of them, but Van Persie said he didn't let his emotions get the best of him: "Of course, as a father, I was proud. But at that moment I was focused on work, like Shaqueel."
The London-born striker only had one shot in the box and failed to make an impact, as Feyenoord conceded just a minute after he came on. However, Van Persie insisted he treated his son like any other player in the team.
“We agreed on this a few years ago. Shaqueel has handled it very well. When he comes home, we will be proud of each other. It has been a long process and he has worked hard to make his debut,” he said.
Van Persie is not the first coach to give his son a chance. Previously, European football has witnessed many father-son pairs appearing in the same squad or working together in a professional environment.
