Right from the first heat wave of the year, the temperature in many places sometimes reached over 40 degrees Celsius, in some cases over 42 degrees Celsius. Right in the capital Hanoi , the temperature in the first heat wave of this year reached over 39 degrees Celsius, the air was very hot.
The appearance of early heat waves has shown an unusual change in climate. A summer of intense heat has arrived.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Huong, Head of Weather Forecasting Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, this year's heat wave has 3 main characteristics: it comes early, the number of heat waves is higher than the average of many years, the intensity is more severe than the average of many years; there may be historically high temperature values.
The reason for the early heat wave in the North and Central regions is the impact of the El Nino phenomenon, which causes the average temperature across the country to tend to be higher than the average of many years. The South and Central regions experienced heat waves 1 month earlier. In the North, this year's heat wave came 1 month earlier, with intense temperatures, higher than the average of many years.
Mr. Nguyen Van Huong also said that the early heat wave is an unusual phenomenon, occurring for the third time since 1991.
"Under the impact of the El Nino phenomenon, temperatures across the country tend to increase, and heat waves come early. We predict that the peak of heat waves in Hanoi and the North will be in May, June, July, and August," said Mr. Huong.
According to experts from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, from April 30 to May 1, the area from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen will experience extremely hot weather, with the highest temperature ranging from 39-42 degrees Celsius, in some places above 42 degrees Celsius; the lowest relative humidity will range from 30-35%. In Thanh Hoa and Nghe An, the heat will decrease on May 1.
On April 30, the North will have hot and extremely hot weather, some places will be especially hot, the highest temperature will be from 36-39 degrees Celsius, some places will be over 39 degrees Celsius; the lowest relative humidity will be from 40-45%. The Northwest region will have especially hot and extremely hot weather, with the highest temperature ranging from 39-42 degrees Celsius, some places will be over 42 degrees Celsius; the lowest relative humidity will be from 30-35%; on May 1, the heat will decrease.
The Central Highlands and the South have hot and extremely hot weather, some places are especially hot with the highest temperature commonly ranging from 35-38 degrees Celsius, some places above 39 degrees Celsius; the lowest relative humidity commonly ranges from 45-50%. The area from Khanh Hoa to Binh Thuan has hot weather with the highest temperature commonly ranging from 35-36 degrees Celsius, some places above 36 degrees Celsius; the lowest relative humidity commonly ranges from 55-60%.
The heat wave in the Central and South Central regions is likely to continue. From May 3, the heat wave is likely to return to the Northwest and North Central regions. From around May 4-5, the heat wave in the Central Highlands and the South will gradually decrease. The risk of natural disasters due to heat wave is at level 1; in the Northwest and from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen, it is at level 2.
Due to the effects of severe and especially severe heat combined with low humidity, people need to be aware of the risk of explosions and fires in residential areas due to increased demand for electricity and the risk of forest fires. In addition, heat can also cause dehydration, exhaustion, and heat stroke in the human body when exposed to high temperatures for a long time. Heat not only causes health problems but also has many other consequences such as increased risk of explosions due to increased demand for electricity, or causing the urban heat island phenomenon. This is a sign that the weather is becoming increasingly abnormal.
Hot weather also affects people's lives, creating conditions for some infectious diseases to potentially break out in the community.
The Health Department recommends that the peak time of UV rays is from 11am to 3pm, so people should limit going out, especially children. In case they have to go out in the sun, they should wear hats and sun-protective clothing, avoid exposing their skin directly to sunlight; drink plenty of water, do not set the air conditioner temperature too low; eat cooked food and drink boiled water; ensure food hygiene and safety.
