On the evening of December 26 at Jalan Besar Stadium, the Vietnamese team played away against Singapore on artificial turf in the first leg of the ASEAN Cup 2024 semi-final. This left Quang Hai and his teammates deadlocked for most of the match. In the 89th minute, Nguyen Xuan Son was the one who scored against Singapore after a beautiful turn. However, the referee did not recognize this goal after consulting VAR. Referee Kim Woo Sung said that Nguyen Xuan Son had let the ball touch his hand before scoring. Captain Do Duy Manh had to stop his teammates from reacting to the Korean referee. Former head of the Vietnam Football Federation's referee committee, Mr. Duong Van Hien, commented: "It may be difficult for us to recognize it on TV, but the referee analyzed it very carefully to make a decision. I think this is a rather sensitive situation and the referee needs to review the VAR video. Of course, after watching carefully, he made a well-founded and convincing decision. In the 103rd minute, Xuan Son sealed a 2-0 victory for Vietnam.
