Talking to Dan Viet Newspaper reporters about the custom of writing the first words of the year, Associate Professor, Dr. Le Quang Truong, former head of the Faculty of Literature, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City National University, said: Because of the importance placed on education, in the tradition of Vietnamese people, at the beginning of the year there is often the custom of "writing the first words of the year" (tân niên khai but). Opening the pen means "opening the pen to write, starting to write", symbolizing the beginning of a new year with progress in academic work, active literature, and career development.

The old people used to say: "New spring opens the pen, the pen opens the flower", meaning that in the new spring, the pen opens and writes like a flower, meaning that the literature is naturally beautiful and full of rich ideas. The ancients focused on literature that is naturally beautiful and elegant, considering literature as one of the ways to develop a career. Nowadays, there are many types of careers, but students are still attached to the pen, so they open the pen at the beginning of the year to wish for smooth learning and reaping many good results.

According to Associate Professor Le Quang Truong, the time to choose to start writing is usually after New Year's Eve or on the morning of the first day of the year or on a suitable good day in the first days of the year to start writing.

The content of the first writing of the year can often be prepared in advance with good words, beautiful words, meaningful and upward meaning so that when the time comes, we can write. It can also be the feeling of spring scenery to write poems. The poems often express the author's aspirations, thoughts, feelings and hopes.

"However, writing at the beginning of the year, besides bringing the beauty of traditional culture and spiritual culture, the most important thing is still the efforts of each person in spirit, soul and action at work. Writing or wishes, the ritual of writing at the beginning of the year is just a spiritual support to help us have more faith to move forward in life", Associate Professor Le Quang Truong emphasized.

What to write at the beginning of the year?

Also related to the custom of writing the first letter of the New Year, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Xuan, Head of the Department of Vietnamese Studies, Hanoi University, said: "In Vietnam, Tet Nguyen Dan is not only a traditional festival but also has many values. For example, the value of reminding people of their roots, moral values, inspirational values ​​with hope for a better future, luck... in both study, work and life. Therefore, writing the first letter of the New Year is a custom that many families practice at the beginning of the New Year."

However, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Xuan said that it is very difficult to answer what to write correctly at the beginning of the year. "In my opinion, everyone should write down the things they most desire in the new year. Some people want to do well in business, have more children, build a new house, get married... For students, they want to study well and pass exams.

So, as long as you write sincerely, put your wishes, expectations, beliefs, and desires for yourself and everyone else into it, it's okay."

In response to concerns about whether writing an opening letter on a computer is appropriate or not, Dr. Thanh Xuan affirmed: "In today's technological age, it is not correct to say that writing an opening letter on a computer is appropriate or not. However, people still say "handwriting reflects a person's character". If you write by hand on a piece of paper or a formal notebook and leave it in a nice place, each time you open it, it will be more meaningful and you will want to have it more than when you open and close a computer or phone. Personally, I write something different every year, but I definitely write by hand."

Regarding the time to start writing, Dr. Xuan said that people often look for a good day and a good time at the beginning of the year, so they can apply this to make their writing session smooth. That is each person's belief, whether it is true or not, but at least we have faith in the things we wish for.
