According to the World Health Organization (WHO), children and the elderly in developing countries are most severely affected, with an estimated 1 million children dying from pneumococcus each year.

This new vaccine is for children from 2 years old and adults, especially effective in the elderly with underlying diseases; people with impaired respiratory function due to having had Covid-19 such as prolonged cough, hoarseness, difficulty breathing, fatigue, bronchitis;

High-risk groups (people over 65 years old, people with immunodeficiency such as HIV, cancer, abnormal spleen function, splenectomy, sickle cell disease, chronic kidney failure, nephrotic syndrome, people using immunosuppressive drugs...).

Ms. Vu Thi Thu Ha, Supply Director of VNVC Vaccination System, said that the pneumococcal vaccine 23, which has just been licensed in Vietnam, helps create active immunity to prevent pneumonia and invasive diseases caused by pneumococci such as meningitis and sepsis caused by 23 common serotypes for people at risk of infection from 2 years of age and older, and there is no age limit for adults.

According to doctors, the 23 pneumococcal vaccine will depend on age and vaccination history. This new vaccine is recommended as a supplementary injection for children and adults who have been vaccinated with the 10 and 13 pneumococcal vaccines to strengthen the effectiveness and increase protection against other pneumococcal strains that are not yet available in these two vaccines.

Children 2 years of age and older and adults receive a primary dose. People at high risk of the disease should be re-vaccinated 5 years after the primary dose or as directed by their doctor.

Pneumococcal vaccine 23 has been used in nearly 50 countries and territories worldwide such as the US, UK, Spain, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore... with more than 400 million doses injected to protect the community.

This vaccine protects against 23 different strains of pneumococcus, which are typical strains among the agents that cause invasive pneumococcal disease, including: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6B, 7F, 8, 9N, 9V, 10A, 11A, 12F, 14, 15B, 17F, 18C, 19A, 19F, 20, 22F, 23F, 33F.
