Vietnam - Korea become leading economic partners

National Assembly Chairman Woo Won Shik emphasized that Korea continues to maintain its position as the number one foreign investor and the third largest trade partner of Vietnam.

South Korea continues to maintain its first position in foreign direct investment.

On the afternoon of November 20, at the National Assembly House, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man and his wife Nguyen Thi Thanh Nga chaired the official welcoming ceremony for National Assembly Chairman of the Republic of Korea Woo Won Shik and his wife Shin Kyunghye and the Korean National Assembly delegation on an official visit to Vietnam from November 20 to 22.

According to information from the National Assembly Office, immediately after the welcoming ceremony, the two National Assembly Chairmen held talks, exchanging measures to promote bilateral relations in general and strengthen cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries in particular.

National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man warmly welcomed and highly appreciated National Assembly Chairman Woo Won Shik for choosing Vietnam as the first country to visit in Southeast Asia; believing that the visit will make an important contribution to promoting the Vietnam-Korea Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and cooperation between the two countries' National Assemblies to develop more practically, effectively and comprehensively in the coming time.

Congratulating the remarkable development achievements that the country and people of Korea have attained in recent times, especially the successful organization of the APEC 2025 Summit Week in Gyeongju city; National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man highly appreciated Korea's efforts in promptly proposing development policies focusing on "equitable growth" and "technological transformation" to enhance national strength, bringing Korea's development to a new stage.

National Assembly Chairman Woo Won Shik expressed his pleasure to visit Vietnam again and sincerely thanked National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, the leaders and people of Vietnam for giving the Korean National Assembly delegation a warm, friendly and thoughtful welcome.

Congratulating Vietnam on the great achievements it has made in national construction and development, the Chairman of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea believes that under the wise leadership of Vietnamese leaders, Vietnam will continue to develop strongly, enhance its position and achieve many important achievements.

National Assembly Chairman Woo Won Shik emphasized that Korea continues to maintain its first position in direct investment and third in trade with Vietnam, and the two sides have reached the milestone of 5 million tourist exchanges in 2024. According to the Korean National Assembly Chairman, the two sides have many cultural similarities, have become each other's leading economic partners, and have an inseparable relationship.

Promote effective economic cooperation development

In a friendly atmosphere, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man and National Assembly Chairman Woo Won Shik expressed their delight at the good progress in the cooperative relationship between the two countries since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992; highly appreciated the parliamentary diplomacy and cooperation between the two countries' National Assemblies which have become a prominent highlight, playing an important role in supervising and promoting the implementation of high-level agreements, sharing legislative experience and enhancing mutual understanding between the two countries' deputies and people.

The two leaders agreed to continue to strengthen political trust, maintain regular exchanges of high-level delegations, creating a foundation for expanding comprehensive cooperation in all fields; promote the expansion of defense and security cooperation; exchange experiences and support each other in non-traditional security issues and transnational crimes.

National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man and National Assembly Chairman Woo Won Shik agreed to promote effective economic cooperation in line with the common interests of both sides; strive to soon complete the target of increasing bilateral trade turnover to 150 billion USD by 2030; at the same time, expand cooperation in the fields of industry, energy and technology transfer to serve common development goals. National Assembly Chairman Woo Won Shik hopes that Vietnam will continue to create favorable conditions and pay attention to supporting and removing difficulties so that Korean enterprises can feel secure to invest stably and long-term in Vietnam.

On the basis of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the two sides agreed to continue expanding cooperation in human resource training, culture, tourism and people-to-people exchange, thereby creating greater ties between the people of the two countries. On this occasion, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man thanked and hoped that National Assembly Chairman Woo Won Shik and the Korean National Assembly would continue to care for and protect the legitimate rights of the Vietnamese community in Korea, including about 100,000 Vietnamese-Korean multicultural families, so that they can live, study and work in Korea for a long time.

The two sides highly appreciated the good cooperation results between the two countries' National Assemblies in recent times; agreed to effectively implement the new Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation signed between the two countries' National Assemblies during the visit; maintain regular exchanges of high-ranking delegations between the two countries' National Assemblies to enhance the sharing of experience in building laws and institutions for sustainable development; promote the role of the two countries' legislative bodies in coordinating the supervision of the implementation of international treaties and cooperation agreements signed between the two governments; strengthen exchanges and cooperation and promote the bridging role of the Friendship Parliamentarians' Groups of the two countries' National Assemblies; continue to strengthen coordination and mutual support at regional and international inter-parliamentary forums such as the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

At the talks, the two sides discussed a number of regional and international issues of mutual concern and agreed to closely coordinate and contribute to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

After the talks, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man and National Assembly Chairman Woo Won Shik of the Republic of Korea signed a new Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the National Assembly of Vietnam and the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea. According to the signed minutes, the National Assembly of Vietnam and the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea agreed that enhancing exchanges and cooperation between the two National Assemblies is a key factor contributing to strengthening the friendly relations and deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.

The two sides can cooperate in areas such as: exchanging views on bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual concern; organizing regular high-level visits by leaders of both sides; promoting mutual visits by National Assembly delegations, including research delegations, seminars, and exchanges between Departments under the National Assembly Committees; enhancing cooperation and mutual support at international inter-parliamentary conferences in which both sides participate; exchanging views on relevant issues to enhance understanding and share experiences; implementing other activities agreed upon by both sides.

Exchange activities may include: visits by leaders of the National Assembly; visits by the Ethnic Council, Committees, Friendship Parliamentary Groups and National Assembly deputies of Vietnam, as well as by Standing Committees, Friendship Parliamentary Groups of the National Assembly of Korea; visits by advisory bodies of the National Assembly, including the Office of the National Assembly of Vietnam and the Secretariat of the National Assembly of Korea.

After the signing ceremony, National Assembly Chairman Woo Won Shik and the delegation also attended the 10th session of the 15th National Assembly. In the evening of the same day, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man and his wife Nguyen Thi Thanh Nga hosted a solemn reception for the Korean National Assembly Chairman Woo Won Shik and his wife Shin Kyunghye and the high-ranking delegation of the Korean National Assembly.
