The railway network planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, has just been adjusted, clearly defining two high-speed railway lines.

In addition to the planned 1,541 km North-South high-speed railway (from Ngoc Hoi station to Thu Thiem station), the Government has added the Hanoi - Quang Ninh high-speed railway. This route starts from Co Loa station (connecting Hanoi's urban railway No. 4), passes through Gia Binh station at Gia Binh international airport (Bac Ninh) and ends at Ha Long Xanh station (Quang Ninh). This route will also connect synchronously with the Hai Phong - Ha Long - Mong Cai railway.

Previously, in July, Vingroup Corporation proposed to invest in the construction of the Hanoi - Quang Ninh railway line with a design speed of 350 km/h, a track gauge of 1,435 mm, and passenger trains. This enterprise proposed a route through 4 main stations including Co Loa, Gia Binh, Yen Tu and Ha Long. The total investment of the project is estimated at about 5.4 billion USD (equivalent to 133,175 billion VND), with the implementation time before 2030.

In this adjusted planning, the Government also decided to accelerate the investment roadmap for a number of other important railway lines. Notably, the Hanoi - Dong Dang (Lang Son) route, with a double track scale, 1,435 mm gauge, 156 km long, was adjusted to be invested before 2030, instead of after 2030 as previously planned.

Similarly, the Hai Phong - Ha Long - Mong Cai (Quang Ninh) route with double track gauge, length of about 187 km, is also being pushed up for investment research before 2030. The Thap Cham - Da Lat and An Binh - Saigon (Hoa Hung) - Tan Kien routes are also being put into investment research during this period.

The new plan also identifies the goal of upgrading seven existing national railway lines. The focus of investment is the North-South high-speed railway line and railway lines connecting to international gateway seaports, such as the construction of new Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong lines and Bien Hoa - Vung Tau lines.

International railway lines connecting with China, Laos and Cambodia are also given priority for investment, ensuring compliance with international transport agreements and synchronization with the progress of countries in the region.

Along with that, the Government adjusted the direction of railway connection with two major seaports, Nghi Son (Thanh Hoa), Hiep Phuoc (HCMC) and key airports such as Tan Son Nhat, Long Thanh, the second airport in the Hanoi capital region and Gia Binh airport.
