According to a VNA reporter in Indonesia, on November 25, the 24th Congress of the ASEAN Veterans Confederation (VECONAC 24) in 2025 took place in the capital city of Jakarta.
This forum is not only a place for exchange, but also a space to develop joint actions that bring practical benefits to veterans across ASEAN.
The Vietnamese delegation, led by Senior Lieutenant General Be Xuan Truong, President of the Vietnam Veterans Association , attended the Congress.
Speaking at the opening of the Congress, Mr. Gabrien Lema, Director General of the National Reserves Department of the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, emphasized that this event will further strengthen the role of VECONAC as an organization to maintain friendship between countries, while promoting practical efforts to improve the welfare and quality of ASEAN veterans. VECONAC will grow stronger and bring more benefits to all members.
Mr. Gabrien Lema said this congress aims to come up with specific policies to promote and improve the welfare of veterans at VECONAC.
He stressed that the forum is a testament to the common commitment to mutual support and strengthening friendship among veterans' organizations in the region, affirming that this spirit of solidarity will help maintain harmony, deepen friendship and strengthen peace in the ASEAN region.
ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn said the event was a valuable forum for future planning and knowledge sharing among veterans across the region. It was also an opportunity to reaffirm common values and shape strategic direction in support of ASEAN priorities.
Mr. Kao Kim Hourn recalled that since its establishment in 1980, VECONAC has played an essential role in promoting solidarity, unity, friendship and broader peace among veterans' organizations in the ASEAN bloc.
He stressed that ASEAN highly appreciates VECONAC's active participation in mechanisms to realize the vision of an increasingly peaceful, stable, secure and truly people-centered region.
The ASEAN Secretary-General expressed his belief that through forums such as VECONAC, ASEAN defense cooperation can be enriched, especially contributing to addressing the complex and profound challenges that are changing in the times.
Speaking to VNA reporters, Senior Lieutenant General Be Xuan Truong, Chairman of the Vietnam Veterans Association, said the congress was a great success and acknowledged the positive and effective contributions of veteran delegations from ASEAN countries, including the Vietnamese delegation.
Since joining VECONAC (1997) up to now, the Vietnam Veterans Association has always promoted the nature of "Uncle Ho's soldiers" and the tradition of "Loyalty - Solidarity - Exemplary - Innovation" to actively participate with high responsibility in VECONAC./.
