The announcement of the roadmap to Net Zero 2050 with the action program "Vinamilk Pathway to Dairy Net Zero 2050" shows Vinamilk's pioneering role towards implementing the Vietnamese Government's commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 (Net Zero 2050) as announced by the Prime Minister at the COP26 Climate Change Conference held in the UK in 2021.
As a leading dairy enterprise in Vietnam, with a system of high-tech factories and farms and millions of products supplied every day, Vinamilk has built an action program focusing on 4 key areas: Sustainable Agriculture - Green Production - Environmentally friendly Logistics - Sustainable Consumption.
In particular, the roadmap announced by Vinamilk at the event is to cut 15% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2027 (according to scope 1), cut and neutralize 55% of emissions by 2035 (according to scope 1,2) and move towards the goal of net zero emissions by 2050 (according to scope 1,2,3).
Notably, after completing the greenhouse gas inventory at the units in 2022, Vinamilk Nghe An Dairy Factory and Vinamilk Nghe An Dairy Farm became the first units to achieve carbon neutrality according to the PAS2060:2014 standard. Accordingly, Vinamilk was also confirmed as the first dairy company in Vietnam to have both the factory and the farm achieving carbon neutrality according to this standard.
According to the published and confirmed report, the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions neutralized by these two units is 17,560 tons of CO2 (equivalent to about 1.7 million trees). This result is due to the "double action" of Vinamilk's efforts to reduce emissions in production and livestock, and maintaining Vinamilk's tree fund to absorb greenhouse gases over the years.
Vinamilk is one of the few units that have started with an accurate and thorough greenhouse gas inventory early on, thereby building emission reduction roadmaps, and with Vinamilk's strong commitment to the Net Zero 2050 target, many more Vinamilk units will soon achieve carbon neutrality in the near future.
Reducing emissions, greenhouse gases and moving towards Net Zero at Vinamilk’s farm in Nghe An requires comprehensive investment in technological solutions, green energy conversion, and circular economy application. It can be said that Vinamilk’s results are very remarkable and have great encouragement value for the Net Zero process of the dairy industry.
In Vietnam, Vinamilk is a company that has been making many positive contributions to the more sustainable development of the dairy industry, while strongly promoting the process towards Net Zero 2050. Since 2012, Vinamilk has published a sustainable development report according to international standards, to accurately record and evaluate its advanced practices. Up to now, in the strategic period of 2022 - 2026, sustainable development has become one of Vinamilk's four strategic spearheads.
Managing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to reducing carbon footprints is one of the key sustainable development aspects that Vinamilk is actively implementing. For example, currently, 13 farms and 10 factories of Vinamilk have been fully installed with solar energy, while promoting green energy such as Biomass (at the factory), Biogas (at the farm). Vinamilk also invested heavily to build a dairy farm model such as Green Farm oriented towards sustainable agriculture. All factories have been strongly transformed, applying high technology, and applying circular economy from a very early stage to reduce emissions.
Vinamilk is also the first Vietnamese dairy enterprise to participate in the global initiative of the dairy industry on Net Zero - Pathways to Dairy Net Zero, founded by the International Dairy Federation (IDF), the Dairy Sustainable Development Framework (DSF), Global Dairy Platform...
